well i got the headers on and it runs and sound good, except [ther is alway an except aint there] well i have a whistling noise on the driver side. it only does this on one cylinder and and when i rev the engine or accelerate.im thinking it the gaskets,i used the same ones because they were only acout 2-3 weeks old because i just replaced the head gaskets and all. my question is they are the ones for manifolds with the metal on one side do you think that i should get the header gaskets or should these heve been ok. its been a long time since i had headers.it did not do this with the manifolds so i dont think anything is wrong the motor. tell me what yall think.

Jeff,

if these are steel tube headers, then by all means use some header gaskets. The old manifold gaskets won't get it. They are too hard and won't seal with the headers like they will with cast iron manifolds.

if they are used, the flanges might be warped,,

Jeff,

try two regular header gaskets. Sometimes this will give a better seal if the flanges are warped.

mike,
well i got out and looked at it again and i dont think the headers are leaking, there is a more of a cherping sound and it sounds like it is inside the exaust around the cat. the cat and the muffler are new and new 3in pipes.could there be something wrong with the cat causing the chirping sound. i checked everything and cant find a leak.

I dont agree with Mike on the stock manifold gaskets . I have them on my 71 and thats the only thing that has stopped my headers from leaking . I have ran them on my nova for years with out having to replace them .
just my 2 cents.

They might be leaking at a broken weld where the 4 pipes merge into the collector. I have a set like that. No way to fix it unless you take it apart, ie, cut it.

hey chris it almost sound s as if there is something loose inside the exhaust like maybe the cat coming apart or something is that possible. as i said it sounds like chirping and only hear it when i accelerate hard. if i just drive normal you really dont hear it. i gave up on it for awhile, got tired of R/R the header on that side so much.

found the leak it was on the passenger side. not sure if it was a leak or not. these headers had holes where the air pump injectors were and i ground down the driverside awhile back.well yesterday i finally ground down the one one the passenger side and now it quit making the noise. BTW i had to grind down the inside of the tube where the plugs are.it sounds good now
