Degreasing

Hi all,
I am replacing the clutch on my K20, and I would really like to clean off the tranny and transfer case before putting them back in. They are covered with the thickest, nastiest grease and crud probably dating back to 1972. The standard engine degreaser and a garden hose is just not cutting it. Any tips?

some oven cleaner from the dollar store.... buy a few cans spray it down heavily, let it set in the sun for a few hours then hose it off with high pressure.... of course scrapping with a putty knife first will help if as thick as you state.

Take a couple of hours with a plastic putty knife and a wire brush before the liquids come out. Make sure you're on a tarp or gravel though; that crap is like glue on a concrete surface.

Once I had the trans pretty well scraped, I did 409 and a toothbrush to get it ready for paint.

x2 with oven cleaner and a pressure washer.

let the oven cleaner sit on there a bit to penetrate.

Simple green works good to finish up with.

I've had much better results with easy off extra strength over cleaner than the cheap off brand stuff. Might buy one can of the good stuff and test it for yourself.

I took mine to my favoriate car wash. It was nasty getting up under there and sprayen it but it cleaned it up purty good. Go to a good car wash because some car washes do not have enough presure to p.

be careful with over cleaner on aluminum...it started to eat at the finish on my starter really quick...but did an amazing job of degreasing and after a couple treatments while leaving it on only 10 minutes at a time and a green scouring pad, my engine bay was super shiney!!

I've had good luck with Oil Eater. You can find it at parts houses and sometimes at Costco. After you scrape the heavy stuff off spray it on, let it set for a few minutes and wash it off at the car wash or sometimes with a hose. It works great for grease spots on cement floors too. Some of the shops up here are using it in their hot tanks instead of caustic as it is biodegradable.

If you can remove the part, I usually submerge it in a tub full of Purple Power de-greaser and let it soak a few days. Whatever is stuck to the part will come off like butter.

I tried everything possible to clean mine and the only thing that worked was scraping the thick crap off and then taking a solvent brush and a little gas in a can cleaned the hell out of it better then anything else I found.

The brand name over cleaner worked better than gunk for me. The off brand worked about the same as gunk.

I've had the best luck with a puddy knife, easy off and a hydorspray/carwash. It works better than engine cleaner. Good luck BBO

Agreed, brand name oven cleaner worked way better than gunk for me as well...

Castrol Super Clean is good but kinda spendy, So is Simple Green, Oven Cleaner is good, But I gotta agree with the sandblasting as the best method!

Oven cleaner is a great idea, thanks! Someone told me sandblasting is not very effective because the media either bounces off or gets stuck in the grease. True?

Putty knife, old wire brush,new wire brush then paint thinner with heavy duty stiff parts cleaner brush, then citrus based soap cleaner and garden hose. Worked for me.

try using a steam cleaning pressure washer.... like a hotsy or hot jenny. they will take just about anything off when it comes to greasy, oily messes.

I used combo of pressure washer putty knife screwdriver sandblaster oven cleaner wire brush wire brush on a electric drill

id say HOT water would be great!

sandblasting ate thru grease as long as it wasnt really thick for me i only had lil spots here and there....

heavy duty degreaser and a pressure cleaner worked for me pretty well...then primered and painted...
