bed tear down.. pointers?

well im about to disassemble a bed i bought so i can use the floor since mine is shot along with the cross members.. plan is to take it out of the other bed.. sand blast it.. undercoat the bottom and prime the top side.. and then put it on my sides on my truck.. any tricky things in doing this.. i know its all bolts and nuts and a small stich welds in the back.. but other then that is that all i need to know about taking apart and does it basically square back up when i put it back together since its a original steel floor??

unless its super clean alot of guys are saying to tighten the floor bolts till they break off because they will spin when you goto take them out.....use alot of caution pulling the wheel well bolt that go in the side of your bed mine came out pretty good but I sprayed them for about a week with PB blaster

Re: bed tear down.. pointers?

The beds that we have worked on square up but I do check them with a carpenter's square. It is important that the areas of the sides that are adjacent to the tailgate are square. One bedside will have to be removed to get the front panel off.

I agree 100%. I have taken a few beds apart and even if the bed is clean, it is probably a lot easier to break the bolts off with an impact. If not, you will need a friend to hold the head of the bolt from the other side because as soon as the nut is loose, the carriage bolt will start spinning in the hole. I learned this the hard way by fighting with the first one I took apart. The second time it took me less than 15 minutes to remove all the bolts.

Re: bed tear down.. pointers?

ya thats what i did when i removed my bed from the frame when i started redoing my truck.. and thats what i did when i removed my tubs.. figured its easier and less stressfull doing it that way. id rather spend a few bucks on new bolts then sweating over a bolt
