when using a 700r4 trans do i need adapter on speedo cable?

my 71 GMC has a 700r4 trans. the speedometer that was on the truck originally will not screw into the 700r4. the truc originally had a TH400 in it. do i need a new aftermarket cable or some kind of adapter on the cable to fit in the trans? thanks

I have done this swap several times, and the existing speedo cable should screw onto the 700r4 trans. Just got finished doing a 200r4, and it screwed right on.

Yup should just screw right in. TH-350 to 700R4 to 4spd manual now and all with the same spedo cable.

Later 700R4's have the VSS sender, older ones have the speedo gears. The tailshafts can easily be swapped and the TH400 should screw right in. Go to the parts store and get a 4wd speedo cable, they're a bit longer and fit perfect.
