Yeah, in my 88 crewcab I have a 5.9 p-pump backed by an eaton 6-speed, she's a tight fit in there but it is posible

Well honestly its going to sound bad, but right now I dont have one in there, before I get it all done i'm hoping to though. I have to go divorced, so for a pickup transfer case I have to go with a np205. Early dodge powerwagons and internationals used them. From what I understand all of the divorced 205 transfer case's used the same number of splines, so I figure anyway I look at it there i'm going to have to buy yokes too. My other option I have is i'm looking for a transfer case from a medium duty 4x4 or 6x6. drilling rigs are a good place to look for those. Of course now that I want one they cant be found for a reasonable price...

In a word, Cost... I was looking for a nv4500 from behind a cummins in a dodge, but everyone around here that had one was wanting 1000-1500 for just the transmission, then I woulda had to buy the flywheel, flywheel housing, clutch, ect... I came across this trans that was behind a 5.9 in a ford medium duty propane delivery truck at a local yard and I got the trans, flywheel, flywheel housing, bellhousing, and clutch for 600, I do have another 800 in making it overdrive, but you might be able to find an overdrive transmission already, I have those models on my other computer though. If you think of it this way also, these transmissions are rated for alot more than the 5 or 6 speeds in the dodges, and the clutches are too. You can get a clutch cheaper to hold more power than you can for an upgraded nv4500 clutch, and you can get it at any medium or heavy duty truck shop. It is no easy task fitting it in though, you either have to do a body lift or modify the floor/firewall so it will fit under. I did the floor because I didnt want to do a bodylift on a otherwise stock sitting 2wd dually. Now if I woulda had the solid axle under it at the time I woulda went with the body lift because at least then It would look like I had something.

i like the idea of the truck 6 speed thats crafty i think dodge has a good automatic and its identical to a 4l80e but i would want a nv5600 because you can find transfer cases for them and they are stock and i got the chance to drive a 6.7 with a 6 speed and i loved it the ratios are so good for pulling and its shifts smooth and doesent grind at all for being a farm pickup with 100k on it

Dont hold me to this, but I think the 6.7's use a getrag g56 transmission, which is compleatly different from the nv5600. 03 might have been the last year for the nv5600 too. Another reason I went away from the nv4500/5600 is that on the 4500's they have a problem with the 5th gear retaining nut backing off, there are upgrades to them, different nuts, mainshafts ect... but even people who have everything done still have troubles sometimes. New venture are starting to discontinue some of the parts so i'm told also, so if you put in one of those then you may have some trouble getting parts in a couple years unless you go aftermarket. I'm a member of turbodieselregister which is for the cummins powered dodges, but they also have a conversion section where there are alot of other people who do the same thing you want to do, and I would HIGHLY recomend paying the to subscribe to that because you can only look at posts less than 5 days old otherwise.

Ya you're right the g56 has reverse left and down the nv 5600 is up and right

That is true I am in the process of doing two 6BT swaps into 73-87s and I'm using the older Getrag G360 five speeds. These trannys do have some input bearing oiling issues, which are easily solved. I think the G360s will hold up fine to the power levels I'm looking at. The NV4500 does have issue with the fifth gear nut as mentioned. I also have an 02 dodge with the NV5600 which I love, but for a repower I would stay away from because like 78customdeluxe mentioned, new venture is discontinuing parts for them. I think you're best bet would be the G56, which is what was behind the 6.7 you drove for sure, if money is no object. They are all good transmissions but all of them have qwerks. Do some research on the diesel forums and find out what works best for you.

i want to do it rewally bad but i havent even got the gasser running yet i want to find a 89 to 93 4x4 drivetrain with 5 speed it would have a np205 that would drop right in besides i dont have a big budget it would be badass to have a 87 short bed 4x4 cummins
