Pinnion bearings
Hey Folks,
I have a question for all you truck junkies. How hard is it to change out the inner and outer pinion bearings in the rear of our trucks? I have a 71 that is making a winding kinda sound when it decelerates. I had a mechanic shops quote me $525.00. Thanks for any information. |

Re: Pinnion bearings
I don't think that it's hard to change them out; just hard to set it back up the right way. I changed out the bearings my self and took my rear to Napa and had them set it up to spec. I don't know if all Napa's do that though.
Good luck.

The whining sound is more likely to be the gears themselves. If the bearings are worn enough to make noise, the gears are definately shot anyway. Changing the bearings alone will not fix it. I certainly would not trust a shop that didn't inform you of this....

Re: Pinnion bearings
has anybody removed the rear cover to check condition of the gears and maybe clean things up and put new grease in it?

Re: Pinnion bearings
No I haven't removed the cover yet. I had the shop fix the AC so I decided to ask the about the noise. Later this week I may go ahead and remove the cover to see what I find. The guy there was very adamant that I need to let him do it because he was such a hard job.
