Should I stop by or send a letter?
Hey Guys,
My wife and I are back and forth to N. Myrtle Beach, SC about once a month lately....I usually like to take the back roads to beat traffic and keep my eye out for the next barn find Well...over the past year, along this one route, I see 4-5 trucks along the way including some junked out 71 lwb, a 70 swb with lots of junk in the back, a sweet small window swb blue 67 looks like it's a DD, and a mint green 71/72 swb... My interest is to look at the mint green 71/72 truck....it's tucked up under a storage shed with a lean two....it looks oh so lonely there just collecting dust I've written down the address and have written a letter to the owner (after doing a little research on the local GIS I found his name and correct address)....I hope he doesn't think I'm a stalker....I explained that I was interested in seeing the truck and learning about its history (didn't mention anything about if it's for sale, but hoping to plant a seed if it is) So should I send the letter to him, or just stop by?? Thanks for any input!

Re: Should I stop by or send a letter?
Stop by, if nobody is home, drop the letter under the door, or pop it in the mail when you get home.
Soooooooooooooooooooooooo, myrtle beach once a month huh? You holding out on me?

Re: Should I stop by or send a letter?
Definetely ask about it in person. My personal experience has made me leary of folks that leave letters. I had someone leave a note on my motorcycle, three days later it was stolen.

Re: Should I stop by or send a letter?
Stop by but if the guy obviously doesn't want to talk leave graciously. Had a guy stop by once and wanted to talk about my truck as I was leaving for work (working nights at the time). Told him it wasn't for sale and that I had to leave but he wouldn't back down. He was about my dad's age telling me how he had one when they were new but his was a short wide and way nicer, faster, cooler, etc. than mine but would settle on my long box. After about 5 minutes had to tell him to split or I'd call the cops. Spent the rest of the night wondering if I'd come home to some vandalism or a missing truck. Thankfully nothing happened.
I stopped by a place to ask about a 64 Ford Galaxie (can I say the F word on this site?) Guy came out with a golf club and his wife was standing by the door with one shoulder inside, probably holding a shot gun. After I explained I was interested in checking out the car things got calm and friendly. Never asked if they were expecting trouble but I did score a new ride. Re: Should I stop by or send a letter?
Face to face for sure, and like you were saying about finding out the history, ask about what they used it for, if it has been in the family long etc. I personally love to find out the history of classic vehicles, and I think if they have had it a long time I'm sure they will appreciate telling its story.
Good luck on the trucks, and don't forget the PICS if you get one, we are all picture junkies looking to score out next fix

Re: Should I stop by or send a letter?
Face to face is how I got my gmc..... I was headed to the junkyard to get parts for my wrecked 72 chevy when I saw it. I knocked on the door and asked the guy if he wanted to get rid of it......

Re: Should I stop by or send a letter?
Face to face! My prostreeter was obtained that same way. I have a line I always like to use "Hello....I'm curious what's the fate of that put vehicle type in here.
I also bought my 68 BBC 4 speed camaro for 2k because I dropped by. If you leave a note, it must say that you will be stopping by again but I'm not a fan of tipping people off so they go start talking to family or friends. Just might make an easy sale for someone else. Make sense?? (MAN I'M GOOD) LOL |

Re: Should I stop by or send a letter?
One final thing.....sometimes NO means NOT NOW (just ask my wife). lol
Timing is everything and sometime you have to hit people up more than once to get the timing right. I have serveral Camaros, Chevelles and trucks that are in fields that I keep hitting up the owner every year or so. I always tell them I'll drop by in the future to see how things are going. They never have a problem with that. Sadly, I tried to buy my 67 mustang fastback about 5 years ago but it took the man dying for the lady to sell it to me (and that's another story). Just something to think about. |

I always stop and ask about vehicles. Haven't been shot at yet... at least not doing that.
