Did somethign stupid today, bent my chome sport bumper..

First of all, my truck is a TRUCK, so it gets used as a truck, maybe I should've kept my step bumper.

My wheeler got stuck today. Well decided id go get the ol truck and pull it out (it pulled it out in sand with road tires no problem).

Had the bright idea to hook a hook to the top of my nice chrome bumper, its only like 300lbs wheeler 250cc. Well it bent it a little (pics later im not at home and cant upload pics). Havent tried to bend it back yet but what can i use without killing the chrome its original and not repop but there expensive and hard to comeby at the junkyards...

I know a torch/hammer would do it but there wouldnt be any chrome left. What can I do to fix it and not destroy the chrome? (it was a striaght bumper now its gotta big ^ in the top of it makes me mad at my stupidity, oh well time to order a new un!!! Or torch it straight and sandblast/powdercoat it white...

how can I strighten it and keep chrome in ok shape (as long as it doenst completely disapeer like i said its 40 year old chrome but id like to not destroy it...

Re: Did somethign stupid today, bent my chome sport bumper..

I have had pretty good luck straightening them with a BFH and a piece of rubber (a section of a small car tire tread works well) laying on the bumper to protect the chrome. The trick is to find something metal to hold on the backside of it to use like a dolly.

BTW, LHM is going to give you 3 lashings with a broken fan belt for calling it a sport bumper!

Re: Did somethign stupid today, bent my chome sport bumper..

LOL... its true, I hate that term.
I would try the rubber, or even a piece of 2x4 and a hammer, or backing into a pole or something depending on exactly where the bend is.
Don't expect it to come out perfect

Re: Did somethign stupid today, bent my chome sport bumper..

And old piece of heavy leather works good to.The heavier piece you can put behind it like a body dolly the bigger hammer you can use to knock the hump back. You want to use the least # of blows possible to get it back in shape.I try to clamp whatever I am using as dolly to the bumper and knock it back in place with one lick if possible.if its clamped it doesn't bounce and will stop not making a downward dent.I have a 10lb sledge with a short 12" handle and have straightened several like this with 1 or 2 blows .

Re: Did somethign stupid today, bent my chome sport bumper..

Why in your right mind would you hook a chain with hook to your chrome bumper to pull anything!! (sounds like something I would do ) Good luck looks as some of the tricks the guys said above should work good luck.

Dang I know that feeling. Backed in to the same trailer twice! Now you can see my stupidity whenever I park in the sun since it's chrome lol

On a side note I live in Warren county too! Maybe not the same state but it counts.

Re: Did somethign stupid today, bent my chome sport bumper..

DO NOT USE A HAMMER..........go the the cheap tool store and get yourself a dead blow hammer place a towel over the bend and let it have it...Might want o pull the tailgate before you do something stupid

Try a lead hammer its what people with spokes use to get the wheels on without damaging chrome

You could put another one on the other side of the license plate in the same spot so it looks like a design feature.

Re: Did somethign stupid today, bent my chome sport bumper..

Don't feel too bad. I drove around with this for about a year and a half after getting too close backing out of the garage of my new house. It actually pulled the bumper way out. We put a couple blocks of wood between the fender and a tree to get it like this. I tried to flatten it out, but the chrome started flaking, so I just left it till I repainted the truck

EDIT- Wow, that pic was bigger than I thought.

Re: Did somethign stupid today, bent my chome sport bumper..

these bumpers are tough man.. i backed into a car at my highschool about 3 or 4 years ago.. and i did $1300 to the trailblazer.. caved in her door and looked at my truck and was like wow wheres the damage.. all i did was wipe off the scratch.. so i guess there are some weak spots

Re: Did somethign stupid today, bent my chome sport bumper..

Bumpers are just what they say, BUMPers. They're designed to take the impact from the face side. They're weaker from the opposite side.

There's also a big difference in factory bumpers and aftermarket. My original bumpers were about 6-7 lbs. heavier than the aftermarket peices I have now.
