I am ready to instal my new floor and tank carpet. What is the right way to make the tank carpet stay put?

I have not taken the carpet out of the box yet but my inital plan was to install the cardboard tank cover and glue the carpet to that.

Can anyone give some tips on doing it the right way?

If you want to do it original. It was screwed to the panel below the rear window. Most people glue the cardboard to the tank then glur the carpet to the cardboard. Gives it a smoother finish to the carpet if done that way. Then at the top you can fold it over the top of the cardboard and you will not see a edge. Most of the new gas tank carpets have clips across the top to go over the cardboard. If you use these you will sometimes see the edge of the carpet. So I will raise the carpet a little higher and fold it over the cardboard then push it back under the lip so it fits tight. Hope this is understandable. I do not have a picture at this time of it.

That's a good way to do it or use a crimp on windlace in a contrasting color or a matching color. Bring the carpet up flush with the top of the cardboard backer then crimp this over the top of the raw edge.

I believe you can use "3M Spray Adhesive".
I'm going to follow this Thread as I'm about to order Tank Carpet too, and would like to hear more about the Installation and pictures of the finished project!

Does anyone use the tank carpet with bench seat to help with sound supression and clean up the look at the rear edge of the seat, or is this only a bucket seat thing?

What was the factory treatment for bench seat trucks for the tank? Cardboard tank cover or on driver's side should you be able to see the tank?

Been thinking of getting the cardboard and carpet to clean up the look. Not sure about spending my money on that though. If I go this route I need the info in this thread.

Bill72, the bench seat trucks came with the cardboard, and the original bucket seat trucks had the carpet screwed into the backside of the cab with special clips. Trevor

So since I replaced my Bench seat with aftermarket Bucket seats, it looks as though the consensus is to get BOTH the Cardboard and then install the Carpet over that.
My question is, how does the cardboard Instal/Stay in place?

My son installed carpet in his 69 GMC using velcro strips to hold the carpet to the back wall. The carpet that we got for it conforms to the the area quite nicely. No cardboard was used. Here is a picture before the buckets were installed.

Let me clarify.
My Gas Tank is "In The Cab". The picture above looks like there is no gas tank, (but just the Rear Cab Wall). I was wondering if the cardboard goes OVER the Tank and THEN the Carpet kit gets attached to THAT.

Maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree.
It was my understanding that a Gas Tank Carpet Kit was to go over the Gas Tank in the Cab, so when you put Bucket Seats in, the Tank doesn't show (as much). Is that correct or is it just a Carpet Kit that goes into the Cab, AFTER you take out the Tank?

I KNow i will be covering up my tank with carpet. ill just use some flatbar and atach it with stainless machine screws

Most of the new carpet kits for the tanks are nothing like the original carpets, they are more preformed to cover the tank. I would think they were meant to be used without the cardboard cover as they seem to clip on the top of the gas tank.
When I put new carpet in my truck I just used a flat piece of carpet and used the original screws/washers and hung it just like the factory did. The sides are just sort of tucked in around the gas tank.

Guys...
Trucks (at least the 69-70---I am not sure about the other years) with Buckets were the ones that had factory carpet over the gas tanks. (Not all Vendors have the factory correct gas tank carpet. My came from GMCPauls and the fit was perfect)

The back of the cab has a metal strip that the carpet is screwed into. The top of the carpet is folded over. At least that is my understanding.

Fine69 is working on my truck or else I would get pics for you all.

There is a tank under there, the material we used conformed very well. I'm very happy with how it turned out.
