What kind of Transfer case is this?

Hey all,

Im new to the forums so here is abit about me:

I got my 1971 GMC 4x4 as my first truck and its probably the coolest vehicle in the school parking lot. (I am 16) It has an "01" stamped 350 sbc in it and after abit of research i found that the engine would usually be seen in a Camaro or Corvette back in the day. I has a few oil leaks but im slowly patching them up (Rear main seal, Oil pan and now im told its leaking from the oil pressure sending unit and distributor gasket)

Whats your guys' stories about leaks...im sure im not the only one who had to repair some leaks.

I was just curious as to what transfer case i have in it.

Im thinkin NP 205?

The truck

Sharp truck. That looks like the back end of a NP 205 to me.

I doubt you are leaking from the distributor gasket, more then likely the oil from the oil sending unit is making it over that direction. Just start patching leaks and eventually you will get them all.

NP 205's are one of the best transfer cases ever made.

Re: What kind of Transfer case is this?

ah right on...im hoping my truck will last a long time because i absolutely love it. Its got a 4 speed standard tranny, dual glasspack exhausts (no headers, just straight pipes) and the amazing 350 sbc.

Can anyone tell me about that "01" stamp i found? And what kind of diff. would it have? LSD or an Open Diff?

Matt

Re: What kind of Transfer case is this?

Where was the 01 stamp? That sounds like you may have seen the numbers cast on the side of the block. Like Nickel contents or something. Your numbers that tell you what it is are on the front of the passenger head pad under the a/c if your truck has it. Also, when it was built and what block it is, will be on the back side of the engine behind the distributor. Trevor

Re: What kind of Transfer case is this?

The 01 stamp was where the bolt holes are for the oil pan and abit farther up towards the top of the block

Yup, best case ever put in these trucks. Gear driven and beefy.

Re: What kind of Transfer case is this?

yeah, just about any small block could have had 01 stamped in it. You need the other numbers I was telling you about to decipher it. Mainly, the rear motor cast number which should start with a 39*******. A good 350 should end with the last three numbers 010. Trevor
