700r4 lockup

After over a year of tinkering with fuel injection I finally decided to make a switch to a carb. I got tired of fooling with it. I'm sure it was probably something simple but I just kept having problems with it. Went with an Edelbrock 1406. Still a bit of tweeking to do but so far I'm pleased. Now that I've converted from TPI to a carb I have to figure out the easiest kit to use to control the lockup on my 700r4 tranny. For those who may have done this swap already, how did you wire yours and what was the cost?

Rebel Wire has a lockup kit for the 200/700R4. I think it's like $30 or $40. I ordered a 9+3 wiring system from them for my 54, should be here soon.

Yeah, I'd looked into that option, it sells for $60. The only thing is that I'd have to have the servo cover tapped to install the pressure switch since there is no port on my unit. Didn't really want to drop the pan but I just may have to.

hey guys,

call me clueless!!!! I am running a 700r4 and have never heard of this. I have a carbbed sbc 350 out of a 84 full size pickup. What is lockup?? and what does it do. Is it a mandatory mod?? thanks for the info,

Lock up is the function of engaging a clutch inside the torque converter to mechanically link the input and output of the trans without using the fluid coupling of the converter. Pretty good break down here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torque_...que_converters
It's nice because it lowers your rpm at cruising speed and helps you get better gas mileage. Not mandatory but, recommended.

You don't really need one. Use the pigtail connector from the factory 7004r.
Connect the lockout wire to a toggle switch you can mount anywhere on the dash. Then run the other side of the toggle switch wire to a constant power on your fuse panel. Ran this on my 46 since 1999, in fact I've never turned the toggle switch to the off position. 100K miles on the coupe and never a problem.

Most cars will stall when you come to a stop if the converter is still locked. Are you sure yours is working?

You can go with my experience or you can go with what ever gets put on here.
I wouldn't waste my time writing this if I wasn't trying to help somebody.
Did you see that I have drivin my car 100,000 miles or what it is? I wired my whole car top to bottom and everything else works and driving 2000 miles round trip to Texas without a problem kind of comes to mind too. I also have many friends that did the exact same thing before I did this and after, so its tried and true. Not only has it worked great I also have a 280/480 COMP cam in it with an edelbrock carb tuned in.
You do realize that virtually everything mechanical we talk about on here has been on many larger auto enthusiast forums.

Lockup usually would stall a car but he may have a high stall converter too, so when his RPM dropped below a certain point there is no more pressure in the trans anyway. Either way it's not good to keep it locked all the time. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear are made to have some slip to save the rest of your drivetrain, you're not allowing any slip, you're running it 1:1.....

On dads 57 truck with a 700 in it, we wired up one from haywire. The power went through a vacuum switch, presure switch then to the plug on the tranny. You also had to put a ground wire to the plug. On dads 56 car when we put a 700 in it we had the rebiulder of the tranny to put the lock up interally, just a hot wire was called for, and when it shifts to OD it gos straight to lock up.

yep. my 700 stalls out if i keep the switch on. mine is made to lock up in 3rd and 4th though. 2300-2500 TCI stall

they all need the ignition hot, a ground, and the green wire is optional... thats the lockup feature, basically just has to be grounded as well, but thats why it should be on a brake switch or a toggle switch so its not on all the time, only when needed.

also, the TCC, what that wire controls, helps with cooling the trans temps during crusing. i had a 40 degree difference in temps between off and on.
