New Guy Question

I may be posting this in the wrong section but i will give it a go. I have started working on a 64 fleetside and my welding instructor/ friend/ guru has decided he wants a "ton truck." I am taking this to mean a duel rear wheel truck. he is wanting a late 70's or 80's ton. This seems simple enough. The question is this...

Is it possible to put older bodies on these newer vintage trucks? what is involved? any easy swaps? examples of some? links and or pictures. just at the planning stages but any inspiration, ideas or wisdom from you guys would be greatly appreciated.

I would think that it would require much less work with say moving a 62 cab onto 82 running gear and frame... am i way off base here?

all of the modern trucks and those examples are waaaay more involved than i was thinking. (read involved to mean modern) I was thinking more like the 62 onto the 82 dually. Add a flat bed and ta daaaa...

anybody? just trying to figure it out and get an idea.

rahatawa your links are no good. By "ton truck" he must mean 1-ton. 1-tons had a taller frame channel than the 1/2 and 3/4 ton. Thus a frame swap would be required. Read Scoti's "Project Recycle." He converted a 67-72 frame for use with a 60-66 (not sure exact years). That would be the way I would go. 71-72 1-ton roller (for disc brakes) with 60-66 body. 73-87 would make a decent donor too.

yeah my thoughts were a 73-87 donor for the frame, brakes, driveline etc with a 60-66 body.

so a 73-87 single cab c30 frame and bits with a 60-66ish front sheet metal and cab. i would think the 60's version of a c30 would be a close fit? i may be way off here. no lowering, no notches, no bed. that has to make it easier. i mean at least he isn't asking for it to lay frame and keep the duel wheels inside a fleetside bed.. ha!

The 73-80 frame is quite a bit higher at the rear cab mount than the 60-72 profile,

The '73-'87 frame swap has been mentioned many times......I advise against it unless it is a 4x4. In order to mount a '60-'72 body onto a '73-'87 frame you will end up with about a 3" body lift (BTDT) unless you do some channeling of the body over the frame. As Frizzle Fry mentioned, the '67-'72 frames are a much closer match if a frame is needed. All of the suspension from a C30 thru '87, and CC's thru '91 will work. Although as already mentioned, the C30 frames are a bit beefier than the C10's and C20's
