diff oil
I tried the search button but nothing came up, so I thought I'd just ask. what oil is recommended for your differential? mine is an open diff with 373 gears, and I will be doing a good bit of heavy towing this summer if it makes a difference. thanks

Re: diff oil
I literally just finished changing the oil in my 72. A multigrade, 80-140, will take care of it. I used a SWEPCO brand that is fantastic has moly in it as well.

Re: diff oil
I agree with Bean. Any good gear lube with a GL5 rating will work fine. Some like the synthetic types but I don't think the added expense is nessesary & I like natural stuff.

Re: diff oil
You'll get opinions all over the map... No doubt dino is perfectly acceptable (I ran it for many years without issues), but I now prefer synthetic 75W-90 (Mobil-1, and I have also used Redline). Valid or not, my perception is better flow, resulting in lower rolling resistance when cold, and better lubrication if very hot or at high pressures.

Re: diff oil
I am definately a believer in synthetics. They run much cooler, which is far better for everything inside the housing.

Re: diff oil
I don't like synthetic. It's unnecessary, costs too much and can lead to leaks. The synthetic has a bad habit of leaking out when there was no leak before.

Re: diff oil
i have royal purple manual trans fluid in the saginaw (3onthetree) in my 72 burb 3/4 ton 2wd. going to put royal purple 75w-90 in the HO52 rear when i get the 4.10 swap done in the next couple weeks. fresh oil is better than nothing, but people don't realize how much heat/wear rear ends are subjected to and synthetic makes sense. mobil 1 and supertech (walmart brand) have cheaper synthetic gear oils but i'll be working my truck hard with trailer towing. it will be getting royal purple engine oil when i get the 406sbc swapped in but right now it has mobil 1 high mileage 10w-30 in the stock 74,000 original mile 307.
