Re: Got a chance at a low mileage 427 tall deck
personally, I'd just pass on it. in stock form, it is small block power with big block parts prices and MPG. And to make it into a monster, you would be into 502 kinda money... with an old block instead of new.

Re: Got a chance at a low mileage 427 tall deck
my buddy is a welder and he's got em sitting all over his yard. (also a bunch of 466's)
He calls them "boat anchors" It's obvious from the fact that nobody wants them, that they are not in demand. Last edited by beebster; 05-01-2010 at 12:36 AM. |

They are worth the forged crank in them though. They are the same as car engine cranks. Trevor

Re: Got a chance at a low mileage 427 tall deck
yep and with a few aftermarket parts can be built to be monster torque motors..... i personally would take one for a street truck.. do some research and youll find the parts needed to make it a really nice street motor......

Re: Got a chance at a low mileage 427 tall deck
They are very well worth the effort. They make hellish torque like some expect from a Caddy swap. They are popular for boat motors. There are parts to make them run better than most would think. That old iron can`t be beat and like said, that crank is a gem. When it comes to hot rodding motors economics go out the window.More power ain`t cheap. In stock form it`s just cool factor.I believe someone has a warmed over one somewhere in the parts board right now.I`d pay no more than $500.It will run some bucks waking the monster up inside, but well worth it.How cool would that be,all said and done?

Re: Got a chance at a low mileage 427 tall deck
$400-500 is a good price.
I bought my 427 for a bit less than $200. No distributor, intake, or carb, but it had everything else. Like special-K says, it's a torque monster, and you will spend some $$$ waking it up. I spent around $3000 rebuilding mine. That included new (rebuilt) heads, longer conn rods (so I could run normal BBC pistons), pistons, intake, and slip-collar distributor.

Re: Got a chance at a low mileage 427 tall deck
I paid around 400 for mine. If I can find the link, I'll post it. They have stroker kits for these motors. I think I'm going with a 525 C.I. kit.

Re: Got a chance at a low mileage 427 tall deck
All of this is personal opinion. For $400 you can get 525+CI. Better then $2300. fact is a 427T can get you serious CI for Cheap. 525 CI for under $3000 for a short block is a great deal.

Re: Got a chance at a low mileage 427 tall deck
NOT TO WORRY.. I'M NOT INTERESTED IN A 100 POINT CONCOURSE TRUCK & I'M NOT A VIRGIN TO BUILDING BIG BLOCKS OR SMALLYS. IF IT'LL FIT BETWEEN THE FRAME RAILS... I CAN MAKE IT WORK. DIFFERENT?? YEP... MOST THINGS THAT APPEAL TO ME ARE. SOME PEOPLE ARE VERY HAPPY TO PUT IN A "HECKO IN MEHICO" CRATE ENGINE & USE ALL OF THERE EXISTING 40 YR. OLD EXTERNALS. BUT I'M NOT. IT'S HARD FOR ME TO GET EXCITED OVER ANY HO-HUM DRIVETRAIN. (I'VE BEEN GUILTY OF SPENDING OVER $1400 JUST ON MACHINE WORK FOR A SET OF CAST IRON 049 BBC HEADS) LIKE TIM SAID....When it comes to hot rodding motors economics go out the window. CRAZY?? YOU BET. BUT I HAVE SEEN PEOPLE PAY $75 EACH (YOU NEED TWO)FOR NOS GROMMITS THAT GO THRU THE FIREWALL FOR WINDSHEILD WASHER LINES, JUST BECAUSE THEY CAME IN THE COVETTED BLUE & WHITE ENVELOPE, THAT YOU ARE GOING TO CRUMPLE UP THROW AWAY AFTER YOU INSTALL THEM. (ACE HARDWARE SELLS AN ALMOST IDENTICAL GROMMET FOR 70 CENTS) NOW TO ME.. THATS CRAZY. AS FAR AS CADDY MOTORS?? THEY'RE OK.. I GUESS... JUST PULL A VALVE COVER & INSPECT THE VALVETRAIN & DECIDE FORSELF IF IT IS SOMETHING YOU WANT TO SPIN AT 7000 RPMS. THERES A REASON THE JUNKYARDS ARE FULL OF EM. JOHN

That is what I have in my 69 SWB is a 525 ci. All Eagle rotating assembly, Brodix CNC heads, Edlebrock intake, Quickfuel carb and Hooker Super Comp headers. As far as I could tell is the only part that was more expensive than any other BB engine was the intake, they are $100 - $200 more expensive than a standard deck BB. I also had to move one tube on my headers to clear the drivers side A-arm. I haven't driven my truck since October as I have been doing a 3.5/5 disk brake swap with little time to work on it, so I don't know how the Nitto 305/35/20's are gonna handle the power/torque this tall deck makes yet, but I know it would smoke the stock tires w/hubcaps @ 60 mph before. All I can say is money well spent.

builing is nice but to me the reason to buy a lomilage is lift it up put it in turn the key and you've got an awesome tow vehicle in a weekend no fuss very little effort

Re: Got a chance at a low mileage 427 tall deck
I stopped out at the scrap yard yesterday, but the owner of the truck wasnt there... his manager did tell me that he beleived the owner was gonna offter the engine AND trans to me for $200!!!! I am stoked!!! gonna find out tomorrow or sure though.... The trans is a 5 speed, but im not sure if it is the OD version or not... I know remember reading on the board somewhere that some of the c40+ trucks had them and one board member did include one in his build.... The manager did let me take the glove box out of the truck, so I included a pic of the SPID... Thanks for all the advice...
