Troublesome Fuel Pump
I have a 72' GMC PU w/ V8, 350 5.7c small block, two wheel drive manuel. I removed a bad fuel pump, but am having trouble getting the new one on. How do you get the lever in properly against the cam? I am unable to get the cam to move...

The V-8 fuel pump is actuated by a push rod that rides on the cam and moves the fuel pump actuator lever.
I have trouble 'splaining stuff with a keyboard, but I'll give 'er a whirl. If you can, look up in the cavity the fuel pump sits in. You should see the push rod. Now, on the front of the block you should be able to find a bolt that just happens to line up perfectly with the push rod. Take that bolt out. Get a longer bolt. With the longer bolt in hand, shove the push rod up into its bore & against the cam; while holding the push rod, take that long bolt & screw it into the empty bolt hole & up against the push rod to hold the push rod in place. Install the fuel pump; take out the long bolt & replace it with the original short one. I have also removed the push rod and filled its bore with thick, sticky grease. Then, shoved the push rod back in place & used the grease to hold it in place while installing the pump. Hopefully, somebody who is better at explaining stuff will jump in here and make things more clearer. Good luck.

El Jay your explanation is spot on. Unfortunatly Guard MP the only way to get the cam to move is to rotate the engine. Life is easier if you try to get the pushrod in as far as possible. Put your finger on the rod and rotate the crank until you can barely feel the rod, that is unless the rod fell out.

Would I rotate the engine turning the fly wheel next to the starter?

You don't really need to rotate the engine. Just get that push rod clear up in its bore & against the cam shaft & hold it there.
But if you really want to rotate the engine, use the crankshaft pulley.
