Have pity on a newbie
I've been around trucks and cars alot but this is my first true GM (besides my wife's Blazer and my old Grand Am yuck). I have a 72 GMC 2wd short bed. From what I can gather it was a big block truck. Did 402 trucks come with 4 speeds or were they all th400s? Mine has the low hump so I'm guessing it was an auto. Anybody have any pics handy of what the cross members should look like? It now has a 350/350 in it. It was green and is now blue with black interior. They put a newer tilt column in it, cut the radio hole, and filled the original ignition and lighter I'm also 95% sure it has a 73 up 12 bolt under it too. The reason I think this is the driver's side shock lower shock mount has been cut off and rewelded on and they're directly in line with the frame instead of offset. Thanks in advance for the help. Also can anyone tell me what year this grille is? I'm sure it's aftermarket.

Re: Have pity on a newbie
I think the front end looks like 69-70. If the truck was a th400, or 4 speed, it should have a high hump in it. Welcome...

Re: Have pity on a newbie
Hey thanks for the reply. Yeah I remember reading that somewhere now. Here is why I think it was a big block truck:

Re: Have pity on a newbie
G.M. NEVER PUT A T-350 BEHIND A BIG BLOCK IN THESE. THE ONLY CHOICES WERE A T-400 OR A 4 SPEED, BOTH OF WITCH CAME WITH A HIGH HUMP. IN 38 YEARS YOUR TRUCK COULD HAVE HAD ALOT OF DIFFERENT OWNERS, THAT REPLACED ALOT OF DIFFERENT THINGS, LIKE A CAB, & IT'S NOT UNUSUAL FOR SOMEONE TO REPLACE THE CAB & RETAIN THE VIN. PLATE & GLOVE BOX DOOR. WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF OLD TRUCKS FROM SOMERSET KY. JOHN

Re: Have pity on a newbie
Thanks for the help guys. I didn't think this is the factory trans. I ran the #'s on the engine and I know its not factory. Maybe mine was a 3 speed truck. It has had the brake pedal cut and a wide pedal welded on. And the column being changed makes me wonder too. I don't think the tag is still on the glove box lid. I'll have to look and make sure its not just painted over. Any other things to check to see if it had a 3 speed? Is the vin # on the frame? Clutch brackets maybe?

Re: Have pity on a newbie
Being it's not listed on the SPID, and it does have the "E" code, probably a 307 v8, also likely it was a 3 speed on the column, since there's no auto tranny listed. Nice looking truck though, have fun with it!

Re: Have pity on a newbie
The info I have available, which is for Chevys, says:
Z84=CST pkg. B85=Body side molding, upper B93=Door edge guards Just for fun, I checked the SPID on my GMC with the Chevy options list & the options (that I have) were the same as Chevy.

Thanks for the compliments. I wish it was all stock but I'm sure everybody does. I was wondering though what all the Cheyenne package changes on the truck.

Re: Have pity on a newbie
So should mine have had the woodgrain? It says it was dark olive and white. Would that be a white top then green, then white, and then green on the bottom, or would it just be green with a white stripe around the middle?

Re: Have pity on a newbie
It sounds like it was a Sierra originally. So it would probably have woodgrain on the door panels but not on the glovebox or Guage cluster. The face of the cluster on a GMC Sierra would be color coded to match the color od the interior. If your SPID list the color as 466 white/dark olive it would be olive with a white top only, other wise it would read something like white/dark olive/white/dark olive sort of like the one below that shows a 4-way paint.
