Demand for more accurate Cheyenne Super Dash Bezels?
Hey guys, I am working on making some more accurate Cheyenne Super woodgrain dash bezels. I was wondering if there was any demand for that, or if I am just to demanding when it comes to wanting things really nice. Reproductions are just terrible and tend to peel. I am working on some that will not peel or shrink, and are more accurate to Originals. I know there has got to be a demand for them somewhere where the repros are lack luster. Just asking your guys opinion. Trevor

Re: Demand for more accurate Cheyenne Super Dash Bezels?
I am relatively new to this board and to these trucks and after reading everything it sounds like the demand is there. Everyone apparently is not real happy with the decals..
So IMHO yes. |

Re: Demand for more accurate Cheyenne Super Dash Bezels?
Are you talking about a plastic laminate with woodgrain like original?I have been wanting accurate Super/Grande bezels forever.I pass on the n.o.s. ones that aren`t chromed and the mylar stick-ons aren`t even close to right. They look great in any truck but give a Super or Grande a dime a dozen cheap repro look.I`d like to just see a thin plastic die-cut inlay (or aluminum) to bond to a standard plated bezel.I have a replated bezel I`ve had for 20 years just waiting for something.I can have the grain paint done to match original. The used ones always need the plating and if you replate you lose the woodgrain.

I agree with Steve. If you can get it done include door panels and glove box. You can spot a repro glove box as far as a red neck can see the moon. Ha

Re: Demand for more accurate Cheyenne Super Dash Bezels?
I don't know if I can do the door panels and glovebox door much differently then what Cheyenne Superman does. I maybe able to, but I need a little more time to figure that one out. I will get pics of what I have been working on maybe late tonight or tomorrow. I am almost done with the first. Trevor

Re: Demand for more accurate Cheyenne Super Dash Bezels?
What has always bothered me is that the chrome on the original does not go all the way to the wood grain and on the repops it does. Not real sure how to explain what I am talking about but on my original cluster there is a small recess around the gauge opening as well as around the perimeter between the chrome and wood grain. In that recess it is not chrome it is black. On the repops it is chrome. This to me makes the repops look really cheap.
I would be interested in a higher quality repop if it addressed this issue. |

I took one of those NOS woodgrarin/painted ones and took off the woodgrain and put it on a replated bezel....Not actually me but I had it done for me. I think there were 2 different bezels even from GM, so you would have to make sure the bezel was exact for it to work......Jason

Re: Demand for more accurate Cheyenne Super Dash Bezels?
Jason, I agree, there were different bezels requiring different cutout areas. I have compared 2 different 69-72 bezels off original trucks, and they aren't the exact same. So if I make these for anyone, I would probably have that member send me their bezel to fit it up to, or I would supply a reproduction bezel and fit it to those.

Re: Demand for more accurate Cheyenne Super Dash Bezels?
I think it is a great idea as well. I've also seen some cheyenne's with the dull silver painted edge with wood grain instead of the chrome. Is this a year only thing or an option thing?

Sounds like a NOS GM replacement bezel. They had great woodgrain but crappy chrome.

Re: Demand for more accurate Cheyenne Super Dash Bezels?
Jason, I have a GM NOS one dated from the 80's and I am unhappy with the woodgrain on it. It was also one of the silver edged woodgrains. I have came to a conclusion about what the General used for them, and I am trying to put some together to show. Trevor

Here was an original on top, and my NOS on the bottom. Notice the grain difference and color. Sorry, my lighting is bad. They are quite different. Trevor

Re: Demand for more accurate Cheyenne Super Dash Bezels?
Is there a reproduction bezel in chrome with the woodgrain that`s not a mylar sticker?I`ve never seen that.I have one of Gary Terry`s replated originals that I`d like to apply a proper woodgrain applique to.I also have one of his replates with the mylar, both from over 20 years ago when he was the only game in town.I also have a pair of n.o.s. door inserts,so I`m diing for a good cluster bezel. Can`t wait to see how these turn out.

Trevor, I do not know if you know Harold " 71 super " but he is very knowledgable about correctness and has some good contacts.
Hope that helps Paul

Re: Demand for more accurate Cheyenne Super Dash Bezels?
This is a facinating subject. It seems that the woodgrain issue is more a victim of time than anything. Everything from sun exposure to humidity has an effect on the original woodgrain.
Here we are 40 years after the fact trying to look at something and decide if that is what it looked like in 1971 fresh from the production line. I just put my interior together, Gary Terry did my 4 woodgrain pieces. I'm tickled with it. I like the fact that folks look at it and go WOW. But! I'd also immensely enjoy having someone like Trevor, Special-k or the Duncans take one look at that interior and know what it was and be able to discuss the differences. You fellas that are into the very last detail and how it looks give guys like me the goals! Thanks! |

Re: Demand for more accurate Cheyenne Super Dash Bezels?
Trevor I am with you as there are definately two different shades and possibly 3. The grain patterns for the original dash and the NOS units are also a little different, I have one of each, a 80's version like the second one in your picture and the other which is a early version but not as grey as some I have seen. The units that gary sells are a brighter color than the original but if you get the complete set from him they are very nice and look very good, I have a complete set for my 4x4- dash, glove box door and door panels that gary did for me. If you can reproduce a unit that is correct in appearance I would be interested in at least one and maybe more. Harold
