Steering Wheel Restoration

I scored a 63 Impala steering wheel and steering column yesterday. A buddy of mine gave it to me for towing his van the other day. I want to use the steering wheel in my 66 C10. I guess the first question would be: will it fit in my truck? The steering wheel is cracked in a bunch of places, and I want to fill in the cracks and repaint it. Anyone have any tips on doing so? What is a good rattle can paint that will stay on the steering wheel?

I think I have a pretty good idea on how to do this. I was thinking 'v' out the cracks with a file, then fill in the 'v's with some kind of putty....JB weld or something. Then sand and prime and sand. Then fill in the spots I missed....then sand and prime and sand, and keep at it like this til I am done.

I have looked through the archives and couldn't find anything on this.

Re: Steering Wheel Restoration

I used 5 minute epoxy on mine. the problem with jb weld is that it sets really hard not to mention takes about 12 hours to harden up. the steering wheel material is like some kind of compressed rubberand is really soft so you have to be really careful sanding the filler material. thats why I like the 5 minute type it doesnt get real hard.
For paint I used rattle can rustoleum primer, white and clear coat. wet sand between coats, it came out looking nice

Thanks for the tip. The five minute stuff sounds better to me anyway, because I am impatient. When I start on something I like to try and finish it with out having to wait forever for some crap to dry.
