New Guy With 71 Cheyenne Super - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I've been a long time lurker on the site and I was finally able to purchase my first restoration project today. It's a 71 Cheyenne Super with a 350/350 combo. The previous owner did some work on the motor and added some taller valve covers so he removed the A/C compressor. I have the original compressor sitting in the bed of the truck so my first order of business will be modifying the bracket and getting the A/C up and running if the compressor is still good.

I drove the truck home about 20 miles and it seemed to run pretty well. I suspect the alternator is bad because the battery was dead when I went to restart the truck when I got it home. Anyone have any suggestions on getting a replacement alternator?

Nice truck, welcome to the board!

I would have a local shop re-build the alternator. Ones from the chain stores have a "lifetime warranty", which translates to swapping it out every 3 months for the rest of your life.

They do that with the starters too. Very nice truck and welcome to the board from another Californian!

Yup, forgot to add that most alt. shops do starters too. My local shop also does A/C compressors. Nothing beats having the work done on-site. You know exactly what you are getting.

You might check the battery before you buy an alternator.

If it is the upper bracket ??? ... take the upper cross over bracket that runs from the intake and cut a little "U" on the lower side right where the backet crosses the inside corner of the valve cover and it should work. Might be hard to see these are older pics. Oh And Welcome.

Well I was able to get some work done on the truck this weekend. My electrical problem ended up being a bad battery so I picked up a new one. After installing the new battery the truck starts great but still seems to bog down a little when I start it after it has been sitting for a while. It has an edelbrock 1405 (600 cfm manual choke) carb installed so I took that off and bought an electric choke kit for it. I'm still having bogging issues when it's cold so I'll keep plugging away when I find some time.

I have the same valve covers and had the same missing AC bracket. I did not modify the bracket but chose to install spacers between the bracket and the intake manifold to sit it up a bit. I think I needed some longer bolts. Pretty easy fix... hope that helps.

Welcome! Take some Duct Tape and close up all the open Ports on your AC system. Moisture and dirt are fatal to an AC system. Al W.

I took the AC compressor out of the back of the truck today for a quick look over. It looks like this thing has been back there for a while. Anybody have any luck rebuilding these or think this is even worth it?

So I'm guessing the by the lack of reply's about the compressor that nobody has had any luck rebuilding one? I think I may bring it to a local A/C shop and see what they think.

Generally you go buy a rebuilt compressor then turn in the core. You can get that A6 compressor anywhere.

I'd recommend looking at the PRO6TEN compressor if you want to keep the stock look and mounting brackets. This is a modern compressor that will get better gas mileage. Here's some info. I just put one in and it works great.

Thanks for the help. That looks like a pretty nice unit and I'm always in favor of weight loss and better gas mileage.

I got a 200R4 Transmission and torque converter today. After reading other peoples posts I ended up going with the 200R4 because it sounds like it should be a pretty straight forward swap compared to the 700R4. I going to buy the TV made EZ system from Bowtie overdrives to help the installation. I can't wait to get that overdrive gear for freeway cruisin'
