Do windshield rubbers shrink? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I had Safelite install a new windshield in my 69 burb today. I provided the gasket which I picked up from LMC Truck. The rubber is for a 69 with the stainless trim. The installer said the gasket is too big but to leave it outside in the sun because it "Should shrink a little". He was concerned that it will leak and to be honest me too. There are some gaps and it is quite apparent that it's bunched up at the top and puckered on the inside. What do you guys think?

i always heard of laying them in the sun to let them expand to be easier to put on...

i have heard that rubber is one of the few materials that shrink with heat.
my question would be if its real 100% pure rubber.

LMC rubber isn't really high quality. I'm still running the original seal in my '69 with no shrinkage.

You will really want a Precision brand.

Wow he really told you to leave it in the SUN!! Rubber expands and grows when warmed and becomes more pliable, rubber contracts when its cooled and become more rigid, so it will get slightly bigger and more pliable leaving it in the sun IT WILL NOT shrink.
We only carry Precision windshield & rear window seals and have our local glass companies buy from us since we stock it here to do local installs. Oddly enough we just shipped seals to Safelite AutoGlass in Colorado yesterday. So insist on precision seals!!!

We just installed a new windshield here in our shop this past Saturday using precision gaskets and there were no wrincling issues. WES

Thanks WES. I called Safelite and they will be back on Friday with a Precision rubber to replace the LMC rubber I had them install. Good to see they are using a quality product. Hopefully this will be the last time this windshield has to come out....

Befor they get there check your windshield for flatness. I won't use safelite glass because it bubbles out in the center causing the windshield wipers not to touch all the way. If it is bubbled out I would request a new glass too. WES

WES, I checked the windshield with a strait edge and it only has a slight bow top to bottom in the center. I also checked the original GM windshield in my 67 and it also had a slight bow. I think this one should be ok but thanks for bringing this to my attention so I could verify.

Sounds great. I had one once that only about half the length of the wiper blades would touch. WES

AGreed thats all we sell also. We learned that years ago from Binswanger glass cause thats what they use. You think safelite would just get an account

LMC sells Counterpart rubber. I don't mind mentioning brand names. Usually the gaskets for these trucks are too short not too long and you can't get the glass in with the ones LMC sells
