tru-trac or locker?

soo.... after returning from a trip to see the grandparents ive got a pocket full of money. (and a belly full of food of course) haha anyways, im calling moser today to order my M9 housing and axle package. just need to know spline for the axles, center will be ordered and built later, but heres my current jam....

....31spline tru-trac? or 35 spline locker?

my original plan was locker but this truck will be mostly 1/4miled, but will also be street driven. will the locker be too annoying for street use? will the tru-trac hold up the the beatings?

thanks fellas!

kyle.

Re: tru-trac or locker?

Having owned examples of both, there is no way I would ever install another locker in a street-driven vehicle. I love the True Trac. You don't even know it's there until you need it. And it doesn't need special lube.

I can't answer that. I have never driven anything with 1000 hp on the street.

Re: tru-trac or locker?

haha, yeah.... should be interesting. what is it about the locker that makes it so not street friendly. never had a locker vehicle before, i hear they are clunky on corners.

Re: tru-trac or locker?

They can be terrifying in the rain! I have one in my Jeep, and it's no fun on the road! It will put you in the ditch if you aren't really careful in the wet because it can't track around a corner evenly.

Re: tru-trac or locker?

They are indeed clunky, but "how bad" depends upon a few factors.

Manual transmissions make them more harsh, as do light weight vehicles and short wheel based vehicles. I really don't know how one would react to a race-prepped 4 link, as far as street driving, I have only had them under leaf-spring trucks.
They are just not suitable for daily drivers but I doubt that a 1000HP rig is that either.

I know you've made up your mind but check out performancetrucks dot net. Those guys are running tru-trac's well over 1000hp and having no problems.

I wasn't aware that the detroit locker needed special lube. What do you mean?

I just installed a brand new locker in my 12bolt and im about to put the cover back on. No one told me about it needing special lube as this is my first time installing one

Re: tru-trac or locker?

It doesn't, but I would run a synthetic. "Just because"....

The "clutch-type" posi-traction units are the ones that need the "friction modifier" (special lube additive). Most of the synthetics don't need the additive either, they are already better than the conventional lube in the first place.

Sorry, I worded that badly. On the lube I was comparing the Truetrac to a clutch type rear. Eaton says to use normal mineral based lube in the locker with no friction modifiers.

Re: tru-trac or locker?

31 spline axles and the true track works great only good for 750hp.Anymore than
that go with a locker and 35 spline axles.

Ok cool. Thanks for the clarification. A shop did the work on my M9 which has a locker and I know they only used synthetic without any special additives so I was a little worried. This is my first time installing a locker and I just wanted to make sure it was done right. They're a little pricey. Thanks!
