My Cab Mount is gone
My driver side rear cab mount is gone. Rusted almost completely away. I have cut out most of it. I dont have the experience or $$$ to get it fixed. What will it hurt to leave it like it is?

Re: My Cab Mount is gone
Hi spavinaw,
Got any pics of the damage? I'd be worried about the cab sagging in that corner and messing up the shape of the door opening. That's pretty much what happened with my 77 GMC plow truck. The front driver side cab mount support (and floor above it) is pretty much gone. The whole cab leans forward a bit and the door opening is all jacked out of shape so the weatherstripping doesn't even touch the door in places. The missing cab mount transferred a lot of the load onto the front fender. That caused a chunk of the cowl area to crack and break around the fender mounting holes. So what I'm getting at is don't just leave it. It'll eventually cause more problems. Even if you don't have the means to fix it correctly, at least rig up something to support the weight of the cab in that corner. |

Re: My Cab Mount is gone
Thanks for the input. It sounds as if i need to address it now. So, what does this require or how extensive of a repair is this? Will it require removing the cab? Or can it be done without removing. Thanks for the input!

Re: My Cab Mount is gone
You can buy the supports here:
http://www.*****************/-63-87-f...hassis-mount-3 It would be a lot easier with the cab off, but I think you might be able to do it with the cab on IF you have an air chisel. You will need to knock out the stock rivets, then just slide the bracket in and bolt in the new one. |

Re: My Cab Mount is gone
Ok. I guess I am wrong on what part I thought was a cab mount. Mine may still need replaced but these are not what I was thinking of. Let me do more research and I will get back with my question. Sorry but thinks for the info and link to the new cab mounts.

Re: My Cab Mount is gone
Good thread...My truck is rusted bad underneath. Utah salted roads.
I have TWO cab supports going away. Thought I'd have to wait to pull cab as well. Maybe not. I'm getting optimistic, We can do it! Thanks man

I believe there are two different styles of replacement metal cab supports, one is welded on and the other bolts on over the old support.... LockDoc

Depends on what a person is doing with the truck. Over the top could be for a temp fix or a driver and the cut out and weld in the new for a correct rebuild... That's just my opinion though... LockDoc

Re: My Cab Mount is gone
If im spending this much time and money on rust repair im doing it and NEVER doing it again lol
so the right way is to cut em out and weld em back (no screwing)

Does the cab have to be removed for both of them?

Re: My Cab Mount is gone
I definitely recommend removing the cab if you are repairing this. If you atleast jack up the cab off of the frame, you maybe able to use the slip on cab supports. The best way to weld them in, is to remove the cab and lay it on it's back like how the cab is in the pic above. Also, I 100% agree with Leon, the slip on is a quick repair that is prone to rusting out again, as you are just "Band-aiding" over rust. The weld in is a more permanent fix and would look more original if that's what you are looking for. Either way, you need cab supports to keep the body level, and to be safe on the road. Trevor

Re: My Cab Mount is gone
I am another in the long line of cab support replacement dudes. Funny thing is my passenger side is fine and my drivers sides are BAD. I was gonna cut out the rusted out parts, POR-15 what is left and then get the slip on replacements and weld them on. My truck is going to be a driver but I want to get the problem fixed.

Re: My Cab Mount is gone
I agree with Leon, and Trevor, get the weld in replacement piece vs. the slip on's

Re: My Cab Mount is gone
Wes (here on the board) has them in his catalog http://www.classicheartbeat.com/cata...%20Support.htm
http://www.classicheartbeat.com/products1.htm Sometimes it's better to call him than email him though but from experience if you get the online order in early enough it goes out the same day you order it. |
