Is this going to be a problem?

Recently purchased a 1964 K10 (stay tuned for the build thread) and while I am really impressed by most of the things the previous owner did, I have to question others. For instance, he created his own exhaust and routed it extremely close to the transmission pan. He did this because the transfer case mounts on the passenger frame rail, not giving enough room for an exhaust pipe on that side.

The pipe is so close to the pan I can't even get a finger between them. Is that going to be a problem with exhaust heat and the tranny temperature? He did install an Moroso aux cooler (second tranny cooler) on the frame, but I don't know if that's going to fix the other problem.

What do you guys recommend? Re-do the exhaust so it isn't as close to the pan, or will it even be an issue with a heavy aluminum pan and a second tranny cooler?

Wow, looks like the PO did some nice work.. everything looks clean and painted. For the exhaust I would wrap it with header heat wrap just in the area adjacent to the tranny pan. should be fine. No worries

Exhaust wrap will allow you to sleep at ease....I see no problems there.

I would say that with the height of the truck, combined with the finned pan, you will have plenty of air movement over the area to not have any heating problems. Maybe a more shallow pan, or an aftermarket cooler just for giggles....

I'll go along with the header wrap idea, if the pipe being that close really makes you nervous. A lot of newer vehicles have exhaust pipes routing that close to stock trans pans with no heat shielding at all. You shouldn't have any issues, but if header wrap will help you sleep a little better... I gotta agree also; we need more picks of that truck, she looks clean.

I second the heat wrap but I have no actually experience with it, recommendation based on recommendations I've received. I need to get some for a similar problem. My exhaust was actually touching my shifter linkage, the shifter you sold me, when I first put it all on. But if I bend the hanger the pipe hits the frame mounted brake booster... sooooo, I'm gonna wrap it and leave it in the middle of the two obstacles. The gap between the pipe, the linkage, and the booster is only slightly more than the thickness of the wrap so we'll see how it works. I may make a spacer and drop the exhaust down a little too... but we'll see.
