PS hose question for a 64 with PS box conversion
Hey guys,
Probably somewhere here already but I searched. Just want to verify something real quick if possible. My 64 has a power steering box conversion - done before I had truck - safe to assume its a 69-72 box? Visually it appears it is. I need new hoses - both are missing - Any reason why I cant just tell the parts counter I have a 69 C10 350 with Power Steering - Give me the Pressure and Return lines?? Thanks! |

Re: PS hose question for a 64 with PS box conversion
I'd want to do some research first and make sure the steering box and pump are truly 69-72. My 1960 has a 1975 steering system (box, pump, hoses), and I'm replacing the hoses and pump with 75 C10 parts which do fit perfectly. Perhaps this link to Alan Grove will help confirm exactly which pump you have at least:
http://www.alangrovecomponents.com/i...s/pspsheet.pdf There are subtle differences even between 1975 and 1978 steering boxes, the later version has a smaller gear at the top where the rag joint connects. Not sure what differences there may be between 69-72 and later boxes.

Re: PS hose question for a 64 with PS box conversion
hmm, good point, I thinkk its whatever the 'popular' covnersion is - I wound up using Captain Fabs frame brackets cuz the PO had some wacky crap going on and it worked perfectly - does that identify year?
Anyways once I identify the right combo though, I should be able to use the same logic on the counter jockey, right? "I have a 19** C10 with #50 and Power Steering..." Last edited by blackmopar; 07-01-2010 at 01:46 PM. |

Re: PS hose question for a 64 with PS box conversion
Yes that should work. I checked online with Schucks and the following link shows all the years a 1969 C10 power steering box will fit. It appears to go from 1968 to 1976. Just click on the compatibility tab to view:
http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...r+steering+box And here is a link to a 1969 pump: http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...2869&ppt=C0031 If you click on the picture it will enlarge and give you multiple views. Just try to match up the pump to make sure it looks like the one you have, and the compatibility list will show you the range of vehicles this fit. If it does not look the same, do the search over for a 73, or a 75 until you find one that does match. This makes it easier to confirm that what you are buying will fit, since many of the counter people don't know how to research things this old.

HAHAHAH nothing is easy - I know this too well!
Mark, thanks for the help. It appears I have the 68 box with a 73 pump (nut retained pulley)! |

Re: PS hose question for a 64 with PS box conversion
As far as I know the only differences with the hoses on the steering box are whether they are a standard inverted flare, or the metric with O-rings. The boxes from '69 to about '80 were standard inverted flare. The ones from about '80 on up were metric with O-rings.
You say you have a '73 steering pump. Are you running a long water pump as well? If so, assuming you have a box with inverted flare ports, I would get hoses for a '73-'79 truck. If you're running a short water pump, then I would get hoses for a '69-'72 truck. This way you get hoses that will fit properly with the mounting of the steering pump.
