I need some help finding my first 67-72 truck please.

Hey all,

I've always been a 80's square body guy, but I've really wanted to get my first 67-72 body style truck. My dad had a 69' when I was younger and I'll always remember that truck. My question is are there any particular things I should be looking for? I mean are some years better than others? Ive been checking on craigslist and vie seen several, but I'm wanting a short-wide with a A/C cab if I can find one. This will probably be a full restoration, but the less rust the better and the more re-usable parts the better. I'd love to find a swb 4x4 but those seem to be like unicorns. Any advice or tips or things to look for would be greatly appreciated.

Re: I need some help finding my first 67-72 truck please.

The 71-72 has disc brakes with 5 hole wheels & heavier front end components. But that can be put on the older ones. You probably know that rust is the most important factor, or at least the lack of it.

Thank you! I did not know what year the disc brakes were exactly. This is exactly the information I was hoping to get from yall.

Re: I need some help finding my first 67-72 truck please.

Some have rear coils and some have rear leaf springs ... which do you want/prefer? Mine has leafs, and I was happy with that since I've always been a leaf spring guy.

You might also consider someone else's incomplete project ... bought right, it can save you money.

And 2x the comment about rust .... I shudder when I see what some of the folks in the east have to deal with compared to those of us in the west.

Re: I need some help finding my first 67-72 truck please.

Just keep checking craigslist, and look in the Dallas section of craigslist since its not real far away from you.

Just a personal note- I wouldnt rule out a non a/c cab if the right one came around. I personaly like the earlier years 67-69? with the sloped hoods better. When doing a full restoration "sometimes" its easier just to do a Vintage Air swap. To get some of the older units working is just as expensive as doing a updated swap. Plus you can smooth out your firewall with a Vintage Air or similar setup for a cleaner under the hood look....

Whatever you find good luck to you on your quest!

Im always on craigslist if I see something I will foward it to you...
Whats your budjet?

Re: I need some help finding my first 67-72 truck please.

I don't really have a "budget". I'm just looking for the right truck at the right price. I'd love to find someones unfinished project. I don't mind paying a higher price for a better truck. I've learned to spend a lil more and save yourself the headache later on. I'm ok with the vintage air. I'm pretty open as far as the year model as long as it's a short wide. This is going to be a truck that actually gets drove, not a trailer queen. If anybody spots anything in my area please let me know. Anything between Tulsa and Dallas and Lawton is ok with me.

well they say if you take a 72 frame and caband put a 67 front clip and bed you have the best of the 67 72 chevys nowmy opinion is 67 is better and cooler then the other years if you wanted a nice first 67 72 then get a 72 frame and suspension and put a 67 body with agood motor and trans and your set but you really need to see all the grilles and see which one you like the best that will determine which year you want

Re: I need some help finding my first 67-72 truck please.

Just get out and look around, I picked up a bone stock 72 LWB in Nebraska for $400
The truck runs great! aside from rusty rocker panles and a couple rust holes in the steel deck on the bed, the truck is a good candidate for restoration. I bought it for parts to go into my 67 but now am having 2nd thoughts about taking it apart.

Re: I need some help finding my first 67-72 truck please.

I bought my '72 GMC for $800 bucks. It was sitting in a field. I had to take a weedeater, 2 tires and rims, a jumper box, and ended up stopping at a parts store for spark plug wires on the way home. rats had chewed through 2 of the plug wires.

They are out there... just gotta look. Only looking on craigslist is limiting you. I found mine in the newspaper. Also you might have to broaden your search criteria, and get a non-AC truck and turn it in to one later.

You'll find one... just don't limit your search to one source.

Re: I need some help finding my first 67-72 truck please.

I been picking!! I'm not just limiting myself to craigslist. I went to visit my grandparents this evening and it's about a 30 mile drive out there and I kept my eyes peeled looking in yards, fields, and out by peoples barns. I spotted a couple old school buses and a few broncos but no good Chevys. I'll be on the lookout. I told my grandpa to ask around at their church on Sunday. It's a old country church with about 125 members so maybe someone might have one sitting out behind their house.

I found my 69 c20 on "www.craiglook.com" its a search engine for craiglists and if you dont mind traveling you can find really good deals. Mine was a off frame restore for 6900 and is going to be my next daily driver.

Re: I need some help finding my first 67-72 truck please.

Take a magnet, the previous owner of my truck had to have been a sitting board member of Bondo Incorporated. I knew there was rust to be fixed but some of the areas on my truck are just ridiculous. I'm in Minnesota so rust is totally expected. If I had it to do over again I would travel to buy a truck that has been partially restored OR is more rust free.
