Question CD Player options for a bumpy ride

Posted on the 4x4 board, thought I'd post here, too

I just got some cash for my b-day to buy a new CD player for my truck. Currently I have a cassette deck.

Question is, my truck rides pretty rough 'cause the suspension is so stiff. I'm afraid the CD will skip w/ every bump I hit on the road. Do any of you have a CD player that spins true thru the bumps? Of course, I don't expect precision on the trail, but for the normal roads and freeway driving, what'll work w/out skipping?

Looking in the $150 - $200 range, CD-R/RW compatable, MP3 maybe, no changer, nuthin' real fancy, just the dash unit (dash is already cut for a DIN).

Thanks...

I have a Pioneer 6-disc, and a friend of mine has a Jensen 6-disc and we both live on a really rough dirt road, neither one skips unless you hit a bump big enough to practically bounce your head off of the roof of the cab! Also have another friend that has a single disc Pioneer that has had no problems with it either.

I have a Pioneer Premier series single cd deck. I live on a really bumby back country road and it never skipped once in my Camaro(one of the worst riding vehicles I have ever owned). It didn't even skip on 4 wheels in flight type bumps at excessive speeds Mine was about $250 because I opted for a deck with seperate subwoofer controls. The have lesser expensive models with the same skip control technology.

I used to have a panasonic that was designed for offroad vehicles. I bought it about 5 years ago. In my first car I was in an accident, I hit a ranger that was stopped ahead of me while I was going about 30 mph. It didn't skip when I hit the truck!!! I do not remember the model number or if they even sell a line like that anymore. I sold it in a ford escort that I was driving 4 years ago. Now I have a sony 45 watt with cd changer/minidisc controls that I bought of a friend about 3 years ago. I have had it in my truck since I bought the truck. No skips at all and this thing rode rough when I got it since the rear springs were touching coil on coil and the rear shocks were busted. I know some of sony's products suck but i haven't had a problem yet.

all the players now are really good, the better you mount it in the dash the less it will skip, we used to have people come in and complain cause there cd skipped, we would brace it better and it would usally take care of the problem.

Panasonic are the best bang for the buck, high power, and they resist skipping very well. I've had on for over 6 years still going strong. Always order from Crutchfeild, they are the best bar none.

I do like some of the Pioneers and Panasonics, but I personally lean toward Alpine units. I've never had a problem with them; I currently have an Alpine 7894 unit in my car, no skips or other problems, but then again the car (boat) is an '81 Cadillac Sedan DeVille

Looks like most of you guys like Pioneer. I have an inquiry in w/ Pioneer re: their DEH-P4500MP (as recommended by 1969 GMC on the 4x4 board), waiting for a response.

I called a local installer and he said that virtually all CD players have a good degree of skip resistance, as long as they are installed properly. That's the key (like lost wages said). The most insurance you can have against skippage is a CD changer.

For the head unit, he recommended Alpine. I've always liked Alpine, had a killer setup in my '65 El Camino years ago. My cassette deck in the truck now is an Alpine. I like the features Alpine has, especially the simple pleasures like a rotary knob volume control and not having to tilt the faceplate to feed it a CD. I'm considering their CDM-9805. I think I'll stop by and talk turkey with him in the next couple of days.

Thanks for the info.

Most of the Alpines nowadays (and most CD units period) have a flip down faceplate that reveals the CD slot behind it. On Alpines though you get a cool motorized faceplate, on Pioneers you just press a button and it flips down. Then again, I suppose you could make the argument that a motorized faceplate is more prone to break.
