Re: Wanting to know/how to smooth your fire wall
As far as I know there is no one making filler plates for your year model firewall. If you don't plan to keep your heater then you would need to remove the heater core, otherwise you are going to have the inlet and outlet sticking out of your firewall for no reason.

I've actually been thinking of this too. I really don't need air or heat but I'm wondering what all is involved. How far have you gotten with this project storked?

Re: Wanting to know/how to smooth your fire wall
Thanks you too. I think it just comes with experience and not being afraid of tearing something up, something I've been working on here lately. I'm hopefully going to start a build thread this weekend and I'll put up pictures if I give it a try. Oh and btw, are those metallic blue flams on that c10, they look real good.

Re: Wanting to know/how to smooth your fire wall
Make a template and transfer it to a piece of sheetmeat around 16 ga would be fine. Fit it to your fire wall. Mark places to drill the sheet metal for tack spots. Take it back off and drill the tack holes. Fit it back to the fire wall and tack it on. Fill all tack holes with weld. Grind smooth. Finish with putty. Sand and paint.
In a nut shell.

Re: Wanting to know/how to smooth your fire wall
I built one out of 12ga so it would remain totally flat without distorting & welded studs to the rear so it bolted in through the existing firewall holes.
Tried to do this without cutting up the factory firewall so it looked factory. |

Re: Wanting to know/how to smooth your fire wall
there hidden except for the wiper motor wiring, the wires are routed through the floor board by the emergency brake cable

Re: Wanting to know/how to smooth your fire wall
I did mine with a piece of sheel metal and weld in some threaded studs on the back side and used adhesive around the edges so no water would get in and siliconed around the edges that was paintable from a paint shop[need special stuff] and if I ever decide to put heater back in can take the panel out,was very easy ,just use cardboard template and a grinder

Re: Wanting to know/how to smooth your fire wall
No heat or A/C? Are these all trailer queens?
I think Vintage Air is going to be the only way for me to go. Their system is incredibly small for what it puts out. Of course, everything is under dash, but that's easily hidden. Makes the engine bay look very clean with just those 4 hoses running into the firewall on the passenger side. Truckin did a great article on a Vintage Air installation in the Pickup Fixup Tour. Here is a pic of the firewall. The four hoses on the left are all you need. Very clean, neat and easy. That's what I want. But it's also pricey. Related Truckin Article

Re: Wanting to know/how to smooth your fire wall
Here is another example of a very clean vintage air under hood setup.

To be back on topic:
User smokedat has some great pictures of how he created a paper mockup and cutout a firewall cover from sheetmetal. First post on this page: Quote:
