Tell me about Magnaflows Please

I was planning on installing some flowmasters on my truck, but there are sizing issues because of their width, and magnaflow offers different sizes on their ovals, and they are cheaper. Also I keep hearing they are a straight through design, and offer better performance. I mean I want the sound of the flows, but performance is my priority. Seeing how flows are made, it doesn't seem like they are the most efficient way of exiting the gases. I mean, I'm no scientist but getting from point A to point B is quicker in a straight line than through a maze, right??!!
What experience/advice do you all have??? Thanks

magnaflows

Hello 72step,
I have a set of magnaflows on my 1990 gmc and as for performance and sound they are great. But as for duability and long life I would give an F++++, I had the exhaust installed 17 months ago and the muffler has completely rust out at the rear, and unless you pay the extra for the lifetime warranty on the muffler(had no idea it was offered) you are out the price of the muffler and installation cost. I would suggest you stay with flowmasters, great sound and company warranties there product and stands behind them also. Just my 2cents

Like I said, performance is my priority. I won't be driving the truck in inclement weather. Someone tell me how exhaust can flow better through chambers than straight through.

if rust-through is an issue, Magnaflow sells stainless steel mufflers too, and they run about $100 each. I know that is more than a flowmaster, but that would be my first choice. 72step, you're right, flowmasters aren't the best performing mufflers, and I don't really like the sound either; you can hear that they are all metal........

You are absolutely correct that a straight line is the best option for exhaust flow. That is why racing applications such as NASCAR and NHRA Top Fuelers use pipe/header setups as straight as possible.

The problem with this, is the noise.

All mufflers, no matter which brand, are all about cutting the noise with a minimal effect on performance. Some are better than others.

I prefer Flowmasters. Good exhaust note with very little exhaust friction.

Magnaflows sound awesome but I have heard complaints of rotting very quickly.

I bought my 66 Chevelle race car with 3 1/2" Dynomax straight through race mufflers and side exit pipes...way too loud for the street. So, I had custom exhaust done all the way back out under the bumper using 3" tubes and straight-through magnaflows. The car doesn't seem to have suffered from the increase in backpressure and it sounds great. Obviously this car doesn't get driven in the rain so I am not concerned about rust.

I have 2 chamber flowmasters with 2-1/2" tails on my 71 Cheyenne 350. I do like the sound of them except that there is a sweet (or not so sweet) spot around 1800 to 3000rpm where those flows boom the cab. My wife says she can hear me coming a block away (on a completely stock, worn out 350). I like the sound though (tone not volume).

This probably isn't helping much but, when I change my motor in my Cheyenne to a big block I will most likely go to magnaflows.
