Is it a Saginaw or muncie?
This was sitting behind an inline 250. The truck it came out of was the bare stock no optioned truck of 67. Im leaning towards saginaw, but would like reassurance before I buy a rebuild kit..
4 bolt side cover, it's a 3 spd. Pics:

Re: Is it a Saginaw or muncie?
It is not a Saginaw.. that is the factory GM trans (last used in 67, not sure if it was called a Muncie or not)
Heres a link to a Saginaw pic http://chevellecd.net/66cd/etr/trans.../hd3-speed.jpg |

Re: Is it a Saginaw or muncie?
Oh, well I was completely wrong then. Do these normally sound like a meat grinder in second? Anyway, where can I get a rebuild kit for it.

Re: Is it a Saginaw or muncie?
Nope, not a Muncie or a Saginaw. I think it is called a POS!
That is a dinky gearbox. Kinda reminds me of those old boxes behind flatheads. I don't think it would hold up to much power.

Re: Is it a Saginaw or muncie?
It may be a POS but its going back in the truck, I don't have the funds to upgrade trans's atm.

Re: Is it a Saginaw or muncie?
Never seen a trans that looked like that before. Does it cost more to rebuild than its worth?

Re: Is it a Saginaw or muncie?
It's got the three on the tree setup, and switching to an automatic= $$ and a hole cut in the floor. Are there any 3spd manuals that bolt up to the existing three on the tree setup?
If I did decide to go the 200R4 direction what ALL will I need, I do think the radiator has line hookups for cooling.

Got any pics of the removable lower part of the bellhousing? Maybe a casting number?

Re: Is it a Saginaw or muncie?
Its a Muncie SM318. Kits are still available for them. You won't find syncro rings and the sliders are hard to come by. You can find low reverse gears and reverse idlers on ebay but they are a bit pricey. Try http://www.mackstrans.com/ for the kit. I get kits from them and they have reasonable prices. The bearing kits are almost all the same, its the gears that can very greatly so you need to know what year and model it came out of.

How can I be sure it's a Muncie SM318?

Re: Is it a Saginaw or muncie?
It may have been in some cars but its the same transmission that was in the 55-66 or 7 Chevy 1/2 tons. Cars had a rear support cast into the tail shaft

Re: Is it a Saginaw or muncie?
No sense arguing when the case number 3830210 is in the pic:
http://mmerlinn.com/catalog/papercli...s/gmv4s010.htm GM-V4S-01-01TR-90 Bell = 3765710, Chevy Case = 3830210 Tail = 3844357 Bearing Retainer = 3741468 Input = 10 splines Output = 16 splines Of course, I'm trusting the internet, which could be a mistake... Re: Is it a Saginaw or muncie?
I'm thinking the internet's wrong, the tail doesn't match up the numbers. I even went out to the shop to check. Also, the truck's at the paint shop and I swear I remember seeing SM318 on the SPID sheet, but can't be 100% sure... Trucks at the shop right now and I never took a picture of the SPID..
If I do end up rebuilding the damn thing, will it still sound like a meat grinder??
