Problem putting gas in truck

Well, before I went to the tranny shop with my truck I had to stop and get some gas. My truck is a 1980 short bed fleet side and the single tank is on the right side of the truck. Anyway, I started putting gas in the truck, and the nozzle clicked off. I kept trying to put gas in, and the nozzle kept clicking off. A few times, the gas just backed up in the filler hose and a little even belched out. The tank was not full, but that's what it was acting like. I recall when the truck was in my garage when I was getting ready to start the truck up and break in the cam I went to put 5 gallons of gas in the tank from a can and it would only take gas very slowly then. So I'm wondering if there is a common problem with these filler hoses that I should be aware of, and maybe a solution to the problem. Maybe a venting problem? My ears are open!

there is a vent with a little breather cap in the end. I bet your problem is there.

Pull the nozzle out just slightly and run the pump slower. Used to see this all the time when I worked at a gas station. Still see it when I fill my '85!!

I used to work at a gas station, too. This truck has a problem. Filling the truck with gas shouldn't take 45 minutes. I just wondered if there was a common problem or design flaw involved. Anyone else have a truck like mine that refuses to take gas at a rate faster than a trickle? Any help is appreciated.

Mine is slow,have to hold it at a certain angle,I believe is someone was trying to take out the dohicky in the filler so they could use the leaded gas nozzles

Look at the vent hose on the filler neck.May be kinked or if it has a belly in it Gas in the vent hose will not let it vent right

My dohickey the nozzle slides into is all busted out, too. I wonder if that has something to do with it... I dunno why it would, but then again, I just don't know anyway.

I don't know if this applys but the nozzles at most of the stations in nc have a spring coiled around them I wedge the top of the nozzle and the bottom of the spring in the filler hole putting only an inch or two into the truck with he nozzle going into the truck parallel to the ground and I can lock it down and walk away but if I shove the nozzle in it all the way it does why you describe

some of those trucks had a ball in them, to prevent gas from coming out if the vehicle if it rolled, take the hose off the filler neck underneath and take the ball out, then you shouldnt have any problems. but also check the vent tube. my 78 had the same exact issue, I took the ball out of the filler tube and never had the problem again. shouldnt take but about 15-20mins.

My 78 has had the same problem since it was new. Takes so long to fill up that I have to shave again.

Mine has a trap door thingy I can't believe y'all spend so much time filling up it takes me 5-6 minutes from empty haha I never got a picture I'll try tomorrow But I no longer think it'll help...

my '78 does it too.

just pull the nozzle out a few inches and giver balls

my old 83 had that problem,i hated filling it up,used to give my dad money and make him stand there for 20 mins..lol my new 78 fills super fast though,only has a 12 gal fuel cell in the bed

Sometimes mine does it, sometimes not. always has. Most people like to hang the nozzle on there and let it auto fill. you cant do that. if i pull up on the nozzle instead of let it hang, 95% of the time i have no problems.

i pull it out about 2 inchs from being all the way in and let it hang as low as it go's and it fills up fast with no problems

I recently converted my shortbed stepside to a fleetside, and i had the same problem the first time i put gas in it w/the fleet bed, the rubber hose on the vent tube was completely pinched closed. I messed with it a little to make the vent line right and i can now fill my tank from empty in about 2-3 minutes. Mine is a 76 though so it doesn't have a check ball...

I have this problem but only at certain gas pumps. The station I usually always go to, which is luckily closest to my house, I can just put the nozzle on auto fill and walk away, it's a fast pump too.

Some stations, I have to hold the nozzle 90 degrees and fill slowwwwww.

It's common on these trucks, but if it seems to be happening everywhere you go, check to make sure nothing is obviously kinked.
