71 axle swap....6 lug to 5 lug

I have two 71 chevy axles....one is a leaf spring rear end and one is a coil spring rear end..... The leaf has 5 lug and the coil has 6 lug..... I need 5 lugs on the coil..... I know the older rear ends are narrower but can I just swap the axles since they are the same year and everything?? I searched but i didnt find the info I was looking for.....Maybe one of you guys with some knowledge can help me out? Thanks guys!! Keane

Thats what I am asking....is there a difference between the rear ends other than the lugs? There both date coded 71.....is there any reason they would be different lengths???

Re: 71 axle swap....6 lug to 5 lug

really, the best thing to do would be to remove the axle shafts and measure from a base point on both. if they match up, then there shouldn't be any problems switching them.

Re: 71 axle swap....6 lug to 5 lug

i'm trying to figure why a 71 coil rear would have 6 lugs... the leaf rear could easily be a 4x4, and that would dictate 6 lugs...
something doesn't add up.
Pull the shafts. If they are the same length, then swap them. If they aren't, then put them back.
