going to put a my 396 in my 69 k5, what do i need
k5 currently has a 350 and a th350. i know i need either to buy or make appropriate motor mounts. what else do i need to properly fit it to the transmission/frame. don't worry about the fuel other odds and ends. i'm just talking major components. bellhousings should be the same correct? also is can the smallblock fly wheel be reused?
Thanks, David |

as far as the motor mounts go..same thing, will bolt right up..as long as it is not a 454 (externallly balanced), small block large flywheel is the same thing.
I had a 454 in a 69 K/20 with mod only to firewall,by the passenger vavlecover..for clearance.. Last edited by 70BLAZERX2; 08-07-2010 at 08:13 PM. |

great so i shouldn't have any alignment issues with small block motor mounts and the turbo350 in its stock location?

I had to modify the front crossmember in front of the engine crossmember to clear my crank pulley. You will have to check around for headers to fit a 4x4 with the big block. I don't know if the cheapo ones I got from Summit will work on a 4x4 or not. They fit fine on the C10 though. I had to trim a 1/4" off the extra wide 67 frame rail on the passenger side to make them fit but that was no big deal. You won't have to do that. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-G9011/ You can always modify them to fit a 4x4 if you can't find some that will fit for the right price. I just did that with a set I had sitting around that I put onto my 78 K20. The passenger side collector flange needed relocated a few inches rearward and I had to pie cut all the tubes & shift the collector toward the engine a little to clear the leaf spring shackle. Took all of 20 minutes to do and a scrap piece of 3" tubing.

Didn't have to modify anything on the firewall for clearance.

Re: going to put a my 396 in my 69 k5, what do i need
I bought a 1972 caprice to get the manifolds for my 68, used the manifolds on the truck as a 2wd and later as a 4wd, I did have to slightly trim the passenger side rail on the 4wd. The pipe fit was easy and the manifold part numbers were the same for the big cars and the 67 to 72 trucks.
Good luck Bill |
