Need LS1 Help
I am trying to fit a 1999 LS1 350 with 4L60E into a '72 short frame. This engine came from a Pontiac. I have interference with the frame and the A/C compressor. (The compressor is mounted low on the passenger's side.)
I have another 350 - not LS1 - with a factory serpentine system from about 1993. The A/C compressor on this engine is also on the passenger's side but it is mounted high. There is no interference with this engine. My question is: Will the older serpentine system bolt to the newer LS1? That may be a dumb question, but I've asked dumb questions before. Any input is appreciated. |

I would get CPP motor mounts, I have not done it but have looked up some great info from great guys on this site. I want to swap my 70's engine for a LS1 as well, I am doing a frame off kind of, lol so this would be a gould time for me to do the swap... Ohh back to the topick I also remeber that same post or another saying you can cut a V in your frame so your AC would clear, or you could buy some after market bracket that would put your ac comp on top, thanks !

Check out www.hotrodlane.cc (Street and Performance) in Mena, AR. One of their projects was an LS into a 67-72.

I am afraid that I am going to have the same issue with my 5.3. I will find out soon when I drop it in the frame. I had to notch my S10 frame when I put an LT1 in it, so I will probably just do the same thing.

I used ECE motor mounts and did not have to cut the frame. You can see pictures in my crewcab or sububan build thread.

The Gen III and IV motors that have the alternator and A/C mounted low is not a real issue. You can purchase aftermarket stuff to move them out of the way. The attached pictures if of the first truck that Street and Performance created. This is the platform that they used to make their headers and brackets for the support items. This install was in a 1968 Chevy C-10.

I am in the final throws of an ls1 swap in my '72. I am setting on CPP tubular mounts with the vette ls1. My compressor was well into the frame. I am running Vintage Air and needed to use the Sanden compressor so I went with one of the Kwik Performance setups. It is well made and fits great.

Thanks for the input. I decided not to cut the frame and ordered the relocation parts from Kwik Performance. I am hoping I can use the regular motor mounts now.

I don't know what you started with, (f-body?), but, other than the AC compressor, I am using all of the stock vette acessory setup. The AC mount and compressor almost mirror the alternator's position. I did have to get a belt that was 2" longer than they recommended.

A pair of $20 manifolds would have solved the problem (no notching required with them), unless your compressor was physically hitting the frame. Member "68 short step" has put a couple LS engines into the 67-72 frames and used the adapter manifolds with no notching required.

I started with a "F" body engine and the compressor actually hit the frame destroying the wiring plug for the compressor clutch.
Thanks for all the input. It helps a lot. Oh, and I noticed the manifolds were labeled for 5.3L, mine is a 5.7L (or at least that's what I bought it for). That might make a difference????? Last edited by Roland; 08-31-2010 at 11:29 PM. |

I got my low mount LS2 AC compressor bolted in last night after great amounts of swearing (65 short fleet). I had to cut an access hole in the bottom of the cross member to tighten the lower rear mounting bolt. I will probably have some frame interference with the block.
