Hello

I'm Attempting to rebuild a 1969 C10 with a 4 speed manual transmission and 4 wheel drive. currently I'm reassembling the body and painting it, going with the two tone orange and white, but what no two people have been able to give me the same answer on is what I should do with the original transmission and drive train. The 496 was built to be a stump puller with a lot of torque around 550 the machine shop said, what do I need to do so that everything behind the engine can handle that?

if you're only getting 550 ft/lbs out of a 496, then it must be a VERY light build...

i have a 454 bbc engine in my 67 stepside. it has ls7 heads and intake..ported and polished..roller hydrualic cam and roller rockers, long tube headers, demon carb, and a built 400 turbo transmission. the paper work listed the short block at a 11.2:1 compression when assembled. the engine was balanced and blueprinted when assembled.previous owner told me that the engine made 580 crank horsepower and almost as much torque. it has a 12 bolt positraction. i just drive the truck on the street. the rear tires will break lose before you can put much of a load on the drivetrain.

IMO, you should be OK with a SM465 trans and Dane20/NP205 transfer case. The weak link, to me, would be the 1/2 ton diffs/driveshafts.

if i have the chance to get the driveshaft and rear axle off a C20 would that help?

i had a big block with about 673 ft/lbs on a stock rear end... (granted, i was just waiting for it to grenade) but i never did... i was running a th400 though... i i've heard of people having trouble keeping a clutch behind much a big block... never had a stick though... good luck.. keep us updated on the motor!! i love big blocks...

What do you plan to be using your 4x for? What kind/size tires?

One ton axles would be the way to go if you're getting serious, but 3/4 ton front and rear will work depending on tires and planned abuse.
