How to replace lock tumbler in 68 ignition switch

I purchased new lock tumblers for my 68 (doors and ignition) so all would match. Does anyone know how to replace the tumbler in the ignition switch. Switch is out of panel. Thought it would be good idea to ask before I start prying things apart and end up having to purchase a whole new unit.

you need a small piece of metal (small allen key) to poke into the hole beside the key slot. Then turn it to the left all the way... can't remember for sure...

As I recall you need to have the switch in the acc. position first, and then insert something small into the hole next to where the key goes in. I used a torch tip cleaner for my 69.

The 67's and a few early 68's didn't have an accessory position so the best way to explain it is to insert the key and turn it to the left as far as it will go. Insert a partially straightened paper clip or similar object into the poke hole and press the retainer pin down. It doesn't go down very far and it pushes very easy so be careful. When you have the pin pushed down turn the cylinder farther to the left. As you turn it you have to remove the wire from the hole or it will bind up. The cylinder should pop out. If it doesn't gently wiggle it back and forth a little as you pull on it.

Keywords here are slow and easy, you shouldn't have to force anything....

i understand this works if you still have the key but if you have no key and the removal is important so to get a new copy made how can i get mine out without damaging the tumbler??

Take the passenger side door lock out. There should be a code number stamped into it. Take the lock to a locksmith and he can cut a key from the code number. If none of the locks have been changed this key will fit the ignition... I have included a picture that shows the type of stamping you are looking for on the door lock. Your numbers and letters will be different. Hardware stores and home centers will not be able to cut a key by code, you have to go to a locksmith.

Thanks for all the input. Just now finding time to try this out and it works. I turned the key to Aux. inserted a small allen wrench to depress the spring loaded release, wiggled it a little to the left and it popped out.
