Axle ratio question, newbie....
For an '84 1/2 ton what would be the best axle ratio to have both good acceleration AND comfortable high speed driving on the highway? I am relatively new to the Chevy truck scene and could use some help from all of you Chevy pros and veterans.

any where from 3:55 to 3:73 for most highway use.
For speed and off the line quickness.. 4:10 to 4:56. Also, keep in mind your tire size. The size of the tire will effect your gear ratio speed. Good Luck.. I'm the third owner of this 74 Chevy K-5 Blazer mostly stock back in the day. Since the start of the build up the truck now has a 540 Tall Deck Big Block Chevy, 4.5 bore, speed-o-motive 4.25 stroked crank, 10 to 1 pistons that are 60 over, 800 CFM performer carb on a 454-0 aluminum intake, Brodix 2X aluminum heads with full rocker cam and 7:1 lifters. hooker heads with 2" primary and 4" collectors to a pair of flowmasters. A preped 700R4 rated to 700HP, 205 T-case, Dana 60 front limited slip, Corp 14 bolt rear lockers, with 4:88. Working on a 4 link coil over spring front suspenion with 63inch leaf link rear suspenion. Running 38 Ground Hawg tires on custom 16.5 Trail Ready bead locked rims. Custom dash with Auto meter gauges, Bear custom seats, 8 point roll cage and lots of other goodies. Its my money pit land boat, but I love it!! |

What size engine? Transmission? The combo will determine the best option. Best overall gears are probably the 3.73 set. I run 3.08 and a 700R4 tranny. My truck will launch like a 350TH with 3.73 gears because of the 3.?? low gear on the 700R4. I get 18MPG and cruise 70 MPH at 2100 RMPs. How sweet is that? My cruising speed is really more important to me than take off speed. I plan on doing a small block 350 with a 700R4 tranny. I would like to be able to cruise at 80 MPH when needed. For tires I will most likely be running on 16" Billet wheels wrapped in BF Goodrich All Terrain TA KO LT245/75R-16/E tires. Would a 3.08 be too low with the bigger tires? Do they make a 3.42 or something in that range? Thanks Coop

If you are going to run a tire taller than 27 inches I would use the 3.73 gears. If the tires are smaller then I think you would be happy with 3.08 or the 3.4?. The lower gears will not give all out performance but you will cruise 80 with no problems. Hope you get what you need. See ya'll in three weeks.
