Re: Did they use rose bud vin rivets on a 79?
All the VIN rivets are the six sided rosette rivet.
A standard rivet or other fastener in the VIN plate means it was tampered with. Run away now, don't look back if the truck you are looking at has different rivets holding the VIN tag on. I went through this with a Camaro I owned for five years. I purchased it legally, got it registered with the title that matched the VIN number on the dash & even had it inspected by the police department. I drove it for five years thinking I had a normal car. I got hit by a guy backing out of his driveway and while at the body shop they removed the cowl panel and noticed the hidden partial VIN did not match the VIN on the dash. They called the police and they took the dash pad off to get a full view of the VIN tag and saw it was held on by normal rivets. The police put together the true VIN number for the car and ran it through the system. Turned out the car was stolen in another state 20 years earlier. The car was impounded and eventually returned to the insurance company who had paid out the original claim on the car 20 years earlier as they were the legal owners of the car. I lost the car and every penny I put into it with no compensation or recourse.

68TT -
Thanks for the input. In my other world, we see a lot of '65 - '67 GTOs that are suspicious (probably stolen back in the day) and wondered what the outcome of that might be. K

Re: Did they use rose bud vin rivets on a 79?
My dad got heavily involved in my situation as he was an auto theft detective at the time. We tried everything to allow me to keep the car but it all comes down to what the last legal owner wants to do. In my case the insurance company wanted the car back and there was nothing I could do about it.

Re: Did they use rose bud vin rivets on a 79?
well then i see a good thing for these trucks there are only 2 VINs on the passenger side frame rail under the seats (rear seats for crew cabs)and and the Dash vin
my buddy thats helps me was 100% sure that the vin on the chassie would not mach the vin on the dash because the cab look so rust and everything else looked so new but it did even though there where 2 vins stamped into the frame but they where the same found out later why

Re: Did they use rose bud vin rivets on a 79?
anyone know if the vins on the chassis can be found by just crawling under the truck, or does the cab have to be removed?

Re: Did they use rose bud vin rivets on a 79?
Yes, legally you have to take the vehicle down and have it inspected at the local police station. The state will issue you a new VIN number as long as both the cab you used and the frame you used weren't stolen or have no funny business associated with it. Each state is different so you will need to check your local rules and regs to find out for sure what needs to be done. I won't give my opinion on what I would do................... Hint, hint, you can purchase new rosette rivets if you need to repair the rusty metal under your VIN tag. Just saying...............

I have seen cab surgery done where all the metal save for a few inches around the VIN plate had been replaced. No altered rivets involved, just a lot of metal work.

Re: Did they use rose bud vin rivets on a 79?
On the 88 I did find mine on the SIDE of the frame rail,(about where the pic shows) right where i never saw it before, but after police inspection,BING right there.like they puffed it out or something ,before i was looking on the top same spot and engine/steering box i guess everywhere else. And i was told the only reason the've let me drive it away, was because i brought it to them to check,if pulled over told "siezed as is where is".Add towing and impound fees would been lots. But with the cost of revinning and then etest(an 85 is etest exempt but,88 not exempt here) I'm bringing it back ........

Re: Did they use rose bud vin rivets on a 79?
okay old thread i know but i need to know if there is anywhere that makes the vin plate for the vehicle? I have the tittle for the truck and things are all correct but the dash plate has rusted completely off. The cab sat in a rusty state for a long time. So the vin plate is unreadable. So where can i get a reproduction one?

I had to do this with a truck of mine that was stolen from my house, the VIN removed from the dash by the thieves, then recovered by the police and returned to me.
