Engine perch?

I have a 67 stepper that i removed a v6 from and installed a smallblock useing factory smallblock perches. Im not happy with the engine being so close to the fire wall, have any of you guys moved your engine forward useing factory perches?

That's about where mine is, the PO swapped the 292 for a 350. It sits back in there a ways.

if i move the perches forward there is no bottom hole??

You probably have six cyl stands. The small block stands fit the front set of holes.

So the the two top sets of holes use the same hole in the crossmember with use of a different perch?

I was just about to post a thread with same questions and a similar problem. My 68( on a 67 frame) had a 350 engine originally mounted in the rear holes. I replaced the entire front suspension with an 81, including cross frame and bolted on a 2004R trannie. The trannie would not fit under the body using the rear two holes so I now I am trying to use the front two holes. I had to drill the bottom holes for the engine perches on the crossframe. Now the engine mounts seem to be 1 inch too wide.

I decided the only way to get this right is to make a "block simulator". To do this I first made an engine stand (the negative) and then made a brace that fits across it (the positive). I will use this brace to bolt to new engine mounts and the engine perches. This way I will be sure the engine will slip right in later.

If you are using an 81 crossmember, that's a whole different can of worms. The crossmember is shaped differently where the mounting bracket attaches. Use 73-up mounts/brackets and you shouldn't have any problems. The later mounts were redesigned so they can't separate, and are really a better deal overall.

Northern 85, you have the I6 stands right now. If you want the engine to fit in the forward position you have to get the small block stands, they sit in the front set of holes. You do have the bottom hole in your crossmember, it is just to the left of your fuel pump blockoff plate. Don't forget that you will have to move your tranny crossmember and lengthen your driveline to get everything back in order. Good luck.
