is it worth it?

i have a 402 in my truck.. rebuilt probably 5-7 years ago.. it runs fine now.. but i have had to replace gaskets here and there.. so my question is.. would it be worth it if i pulled it. check the cylinder wear if its still good and pistons are still good give them a good parts wash bath. install bearings and new cam and lifters and gaskets and everything? my idea.. im sure its got carbon build up and get one of the summits rebuild kits for like 400 bucks and hopefully give it a few miles per gallon this way? or shall i just leave it and wait til a major problem occurs.. take about half tank to drive 60 miles

If it runs fine why mess with it?

just seein if by cleaning the stuff would get me better mpg.. i want a different cam tho. i want a bigger one to give me the more loping sound

doing some tuning would probably give you more of a boost in MPG than doing a rebuild. What carb are you running and how is it jetted? What ignition are you running? These both can be tuned to optimize mileage.

Also forgot to ask what tranny and rear are you running? OD and/or taller gears could help out too.

The $400 you spend would take a long time to make up in whatever fuel economy you did find. Not to mention that it will cost you WAY more than $400. We all konw what happens when you pull an engine to do a quick "refresher". One thing leads to another and pretty soon you are spending $2,000 trying to save $500 in gas.
