I seem to recall that car makers are or were required to supply parts for 7 years. I can't say if its true though...

Re: when did gm stop making nos parts for our trucks?

I'm not sure but I know a friend of mine bought fenders & a hood from GM in about 87-88 for a 69 Camaro. Whether they were just in stock somewhere or still producing them I don't know.

Re: when did gm stop making nos parts for our trucks?

Don't know when they stopped producing parts, but I do know I could get a new 69-70 grille shell through a Chevy dealer a two years ago for a little over $600. Because GM still makes them or has them made, the repop shells don't have the "chevrolet" stamped into the shell like the real deals. Last I checked, LMC was selling them for $900. I'm sure that there are other genuine parts still being produced even if under a licensee agreement, but the economy and the difficulties the car manufacturers have had over the last few years will probably further erode and gm restoration parts availability.

Re: when did gm stop making nos parts for our trucks?

By law, all automakers need to build replacement parts for 10 years after a vehicle is produced, so basically by 1982, NOS parts were done being built.

You are correct that is the law. That's not necessarily when they quit though. If a piece is either common to later year vehicles, or it still sells well, they may continue to manufacturer it much longer.

As an example I was able to buy fender liners direct from GM for much longer as this is an item that is commonly used.

Re: when did gm stop making nos parts for our trucks?

I met a guy at a show last year who restored his '72 in '88-89 entirely with NOS parts from the same dealership he bought it from. It had been retired from farm use and had ALOT of new parts. He was able to buy some things I never new you could get anywhere, even aftermarket. Pretty neat I thought, then the original salesman came by and noticed his name on the framed sales receipt and stopped to chat!!!

Sorry, a bit off topic but I thought it was cool.

Remember, some of the parts were used on other newer vehicles (like side marker lights). This would extend the availability a few years past '82.

Re: when did gm stop making nos parts for our trucks?

The posting that 10 years is the law is correct. I bought a Chevrolet parts catalog in '79, and found part numbers for '69 Corvairs. I had a '64 Corvair, so that was interesting.

Now, what did I do with that catalog.....?

That used to be true, not so any more. There are a lot of new model parts that were never made for individual sale. Not even for repair. Fairly rare, but it does happen.

Our trucks of course, did fall under that ruling and GM did abide by it.

Re: when did gm stop making nos parts for our trucks?

I know back in 2000-2001 is when GM sold off ALL of their NOS parts warehouses that stored all these parts. The next week everything tripled or more in price. It was crazy. I worked in a body shop back then and we had doors and fenders ordered for a 1979 Jimmy. Luckily they were shipped out. If they wouldn't have been pulled that day our $500 order would have been $1850+ freight.

Re: when did gm stop making nos parts for our trucks?

Unless you have a citation for those laws, I believe the 10-year rule is, in fact, a myth.

Here's an article from last December on the shuttering of Pontiac in the Wall Street Journal:

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000...016433580.html

Relevant quotes for the Ritalin folks:

"John McDonald, a General Motors spokesman, points out that auto makers are required by law to supply parts for the full warranty period. That can be up to five years or 100,000 miles for some GM vehicles."

***

"More recently discontinued makes like Chrysler's Plymouth unit (last model year: 2001) and GM's Oldsmobile (last model year: 2004) still have the support of their parent companies. Contrary to a widely held belief, though, car makers do not have to keep making parts for 10 years after ending production of a car or a line of cars."

I know that Ford has some 1 year only Power Stroke engine sensors that were never made available.

Re: when did gm stop making nos parts for our trucks?

In about 1986 or so, I purchased a rear cab panel for my chopped 67 for $220 from my local Chevy dealer. He also said they had 11 available, I wish I knew then, what I know now!

Re: when did gm stop making nos parts for our trucks?

I know FMC stops at 8 years, but then again it does not mean the replacement parts are the actual assembly line parts. ie) 09 mustang front fenders are green corrosion treated then painted. The Ford retailed replacement fender is EDP coated and comes with a FOMOCO stamp but its not the same fender that was taken off. The 69-70 grilles mentioned above were not stamped by GM all these last few years, they are contracted out and they have flaws in them just like the other companies making them. Car mfg's were mainly assemblers using parts produced by Tier level suppliers, some of the parts we sell do not have the GM part number but are still the same part supplied to the Big 3 and the mfg's still produce them just not in the factory packaging. I know FOrd is eight and I think that used to be 10 for all but ford is eight now.
