Question Alternator ?

Can a 1 wire alternator be converted to a 3 wire? If so, how?

Re: Alternator ?

I don't mean to hijack. But I want to go the exact opposite direction. The truck WAS running a 1-wire and I'm switching to a serpentine set up that has a great alt on it. But it's 3-wire.

What should each of us do?

Re: Alternator ?

Don't know if a 1 wire can be converted to a 3 wire but it would probably require the internals to be swapped out, however not sure the housing would have the port holes for the #1 and #2 wires so would be lots easyer to just buy a new alternator.

But you can definantly install a 3 wire with a little knowledge of the electrical system, heres a couple threads in the subject, if ya search alternator conversion, or 3 wire, alternator swap, ect.. ect. you can find many more threads on the subject..

it helps to know what year truck (if you have a charging indicator guage or the alt light in the dash) and the model alt you plan to install..

Re: Alternator ?

On the SI type, I believe you can do it by replacing the regulator. You have an SI if the plug terminals are marked 1 and 2.
