Chevyman's under $1000 budget project

Well I am trying to get me a truck together on the cheap. I figured I would make another build thread for it. I recently came across a 1977 Scottsdale with no motor or tranny. The plan is to get a nice looking and running truck for under $1000.

The 77

Re: Chevyman's under $1000 budget project

Bought a 1985 suburban 4x4 on 33s with a 350 and a bad tranny for $900, sold the wheels and tires for $650 so after I part some more of it out and scrap the body and frame I will basically be getting a motor and various little parts for free.

Going to pick up a turbo 350 tonight for $150

Re: Chevyman's under $1000 budget project

Thanks guys

Got out today and got the front clip off and starting cleaning 33 years worth of grime out. Looks like I am going to be painting the engine bay and stuff too as the paint was coming off.

Stuff works decently well just don't breathe it in and it will take off some paint if its weak. Its $2 at kroger

Next up is rustoleum paint in the engine bay, motor going in, and then on to rust repair.

Bonus pics.....lol
The 1983 looking on silently wondering when it will get its turn

The 1985 Suburban returns to the fiery depths from which it came (need some parts for the 1983 then its on to the scrapyard for it)

Re: Chevyman's under $1000 budget project

Thanks, wife stole the camera today so no pics but got the bay and the motor painted and ready for installation. I also found a ton of gaskets and extra parts in the truck such as an edelbrock intake manifold and a set of headers.

Re: Chevyman's under $1000 budget project

Well I didn't get to scuff it up quite as much as I would have liked, I really want to get this truck back on the road. Things are kind of up in the air as far as my employment so if things don't work out I want to have my projects ready to sell if it comes to that.

I also would have preferred a satin black but all they had in stock was gloss black but it was in the 33% free cans so I scored there.

I'm happy with it but obviously I wish I could take it apart piece by piece and do it that way. This way got rid of all the grease and I was able to put some spray on it to protect from rust.

btw I have no idea what that crap on the firewall is, It almost feels like bedliner or something. It wouldn't come off easily so I just left it.

Re: Chevyman's under $1000 budget project

looks good. It always amazes me what a little spray paint can do for the look of a truck....a finished frame and engine bay takes it up a level

Re: Chevyman's under $1000 budget project

nice work

did you get inner rockers or outer floors for the seat area? looks like the lip behind the rocker is bad going up onto the seat raised hump.

love seeing pics like this, makes ne wished i had my old one so I could do floors and stuff to it.

Re: Chevyman's under $1000 budget project

Haha thanks guys, kind of feeling like I might have bit off more than I can chew though. This is my first time welding and doing metalwork. The floor pan I bought doesn't even come close to fitting. I am thinking about just making my own, seems easier at this point. I am also not doing the whole rocker, just the part that is rusty. Sure it would be better to do the whole thing but the ends aren't bad at all and I'm kind of worried about screwing it up at this point. I practiced welding today and got to the point where I feel confident moving forward on the truck. So we will see how it goes.

Re: Chevyman's under $1000 budget project

well sorry guys but it appears as if this is going on hold for a while, This metal work is wayyyy over my head and with my first child on the way in 2 months and now being unemployed it is looking like I need to get my 83 together and sold then come back to this later when things are a little better. As much as I hate to do it I may have to part this one out and try again later.
