Re: Project overlooked

Got it back to the shop and did a quick survey, doors are shot, bit of rust in cowl, ect pretty much everything i expected. Build calls for the basic chop, chanel, section, phantom dually kinda thing. We'll see how mockup goes and see how much i can take out of it and still fit it all in. What's the lowest you all got one of these things so far? meaning ground to top of roof?

Re: Project overlooked

Well i just don't have any room at my shop as its full of customers cars so i struck a deal to take it to a little island near the one i'm on to a buddies house on the property of the old familly autowrecker that was built back in the 40's or 50's. Basic shop, two bays, pit, 60 years of clutter. Gonna do this build old school i guess, cept he's got a good mig there. other than that it's straight out of the 1950's

Re: Project overlooked

Cut all the bolts and pulled the box while it was still on the trailer so we didn't have to carry it to far and pulled the canopy. Looks like the box shen a wee bit of rust by the looks of the crossmembers. Frame looks a bit punky round them upper coil mounts too.

Re: Project overlooked

dropped the front inners and bumper off at the same time to take some measurments and get a rough idea as to what kinda room i'm dealing with for rolling stock room and for building headers. Never built a set of headers before, thought this might be a good one to learn on.

Re: Project overlooked

put tha canopy back on the box and turned it into a nice little storage bin for all the rest of the parts i take off. also rolled a 235 up next to it to eyeball what kindas meat i can section out and keep tires under the truck.

Re: Project overlooked

Mucked out the shop a bit to make room and got the old dodge drag car with 4 flat tires and no guts dragged out back the shop and tarped it and rolled the 70 off the trailer and into the shop.

Re: Project overlooked

Started tearing the front end down and saving anything that might be savable to sell and put money back into the project. Think i may have a guy on the line for the exaust and all the small block dressings to convert his 6er into a v8 truck. we'll see.

Re: Project overlooked

Pulled the radsupport and heater and such and took some reference pics of where the small block sits, looks like the heater will have to be shaved and a smaller unit put in to make room for headers and tires.

Re: Project overlooked

A quick look at the engine says that it was probabably getting the old rev test when a valve spring broke and it dropped a valve sendind the rod through the pan and then whiping the piston back up at the spark plug/piston stop and making that chocolaite milkshake looking stuff pooring into the pan. Everythings unbolted ready to come out but it's time to scour the island for parts.

Re: Project overlooked

Stopped by another shop i do glass work for from time to time on the little island and he pointed me towards some good doors in the bushes and a set of 16 inch dually rims that were deeply entrenched in the blackburries but ha said if i could cut my way in and get them they were mine so a few thorns and cuts, and scrapes later i had some dual rims for mockup and a set of doors.

Re: Project overlooked

spotted a slope nose hood on a rusty parts truck and talked him out of that too. i also eyed up the roof on the truck as i will need a second one for the chop. Plan also is to shave the center line out of the hood as it won't go with the shaker.

First time i'd seen the camino all finnished and driving since i did the body and paint. looks sweet all together, talked him into hanging around for a quick motor swap.

Re: Project overlooked

out with the old and in with the new. bigblock sits a bit tighter on the bottom and may twart my plans to drop the engine back and down for handling and overall height. pully hits member in front of it. That'll have to be notched.

Re: Project overlooked

With the shaker mocked up looks like i have 8 inches to play with as far as dropping and sectioning the cab and having the shaker line up. might be able to drop the motor a 1/4 to 1/2 inch depending on how much i have to shave the crossmember and may be able to work another 1/4 to half into the peak of the hood.

Re: Project overlooked

Took one more shaker pic and then took out the front springs and cut out the bumpstops to figure out how much drop spindle i'm gonna need and what i'm gonna do for control arms, balljoint bind ect and look at steering angles and just generally see what it does as i am new to these trucks.

Re: Project overlooked

Fronts down and i got some measurments. now moving to the back, looks straight off like the trail arms will hit the frame before the frame hits the ground so i left a little extra a bucked it back so it clears.

Re: Project overlooked

Got off the ferry to find the cab fairy had dropped of a second cab for my with a note saying to give him two and a half. Along with the cab came a straight chrome chev bumper, a rad support that is in far better shape than mine a auto colun shift column and a few other things i could use.

Re: Project overlooked

cab looks decent, rad support is real good and there are fenders too. Decent price at 250 bucks i think.

Re: Project overlooked

now the question, does a 70's chev cab fit in the back of a 98 shortbox, kinda sorta, not really. Well that brings the build thread up to date, all this took place in the last two weekends since i bought the truck. taking a couple weekends off now for family stuff but should be back at it hard after that.
