Axel Identification (numbers are where?)

What numbers tell me what the rear end is?
Where are the numbers on the axel?
I have a 1983 C10 w/ a 10 bolt rear end.
I want to figure out what I have.
I also plan to count the rotations, but I would like to check the numbers.

thanks

Pop the diff. cover open, the ring gear will have a set of stamped numbers on it, followed by "GM x y" where x and y are the teeth count of the pinion and ring. Divide the latter with the former and you'll have an exact gear ratio.
