Lost computer file with everything

I think I am going to have a stroke. just went in to update the file on my '79 stepside and it is gone. everything is gone for the truck. all my reassembly pics, all my plans, estimates, costs, everything. anyone know how to recover a folder. I searched everything. planning to bring a professional in tomorrow

DON'T!!! That costs money. Lol, you're lucky I'm a computer nut. Whenever you delete a file or a file gets deleted, whatever the case is, it's still on your hard drive, it's just not visible to the operating system. There is a program, it's about $50, and you can recover these hidden images on your hard drive yourself. Digital Rescue Premium is basically the best current software for this type of situation. It will scan your hard drive and find the files you are looking for.

also are you sure it didn't get dragged accidentally into a folder surrounding it.

Re: Lost computer file with everything

Very easy way to get your stuff back. Go to start, accessories, system recovery. Open it up and select the date you want to recover to like 10/10/2010

Right, but then this just sets the computer back to an earlier date, usually not that close to current and will erase anything made or installed after that point.

And free recovery software is alright I guess, I would just rather use some others in mind...

I am cheap with stuff like that. With 3 kids been there done that many times. Have never paid for software like that.. to many free options that work just fine. If I was using it daily, I could see paying.. but to recover a few files, the free should work fine for you.

Re: Lost computer file with everything

OK for the questions about the recycle bin and moving the file. I was going to go into more detail. but I guess I deserve the questions. I am not a computer wiz, but I checked everything, did extensive searches for the files, folders, did searches for *.xls, & *.jpg and nothing came up. I have some limited information on my work computer. but I will be getting an external hard drive. the crazy thing is, it is the only folder I know that is gone. I am going to talk to some computer friends around here to see if they have the software. As for going back to the day it was deleted, I am not sure how long ago it disappeared. that is the scary thing, could have been 2 months ago. WISH ME LUCK. Thanks for the tips. I will look into the software.

Same here. Just as long as the file didn't get overwritten, and after 2 months you never know.

Re: Lost computer file with everything

I feel your pain.

For future ref. you might want to invest in some USB flash drives. I back my files up using them.

My wife is a wizard at tracking sale advertisements, we get the 8GB SanDisk® Cruzer® Micro USB Flash Drives on sale for about $15.00 at Staples.

Re: Lost computer file with everything

I had a guy at work dig in my hard drive and pulled out about 25,000 photos. I have been sifting through them for a few days now. I have found a good amount of old pics, but the ones I really need are not there yet. I have found a ton of progress pics, but no disassembly pics. that is killing me. and lost my excel spreadsheet that has the cost to date, and budget with website links on some of the items I planned to install. I have all my receipts, so I can update that. but I have come to terms with this deal and will have a backup drive by next week.
