Luckily the weather here is not bad most of the time. You could get a cheap car port

Re: Anyone else workin out of a driveway?

Every house I have lived at (and now own) has had a gravel driveway with no cover. I think I am going to pour a small pad at the end, just inside the backyard. Even if it just big enough to put four jack-stands on I would be happy.

What is worse (at least IMO) is the heat down here. Next summer I will buy a 10' easy up canopy for working under the hood.

Re: Anyone else workin out of a driveway?

I have worked on and built many projects out side in the driveway, yard, parking lot, what ever works. Heck, I put up a small shop, and I still find myself working on stuff out side. Dang it!

You're not alone. Mine's on the back patio. Afraid to leave it out front for fear of it disappearing.

Re: Anyone else workin out of a driveway?

I am maxxed out for space at the house so I'm building my 58 on the Navy Base. I spent all evening laying in a puddle in the rain pulling the bed and rearend. Every time I loosened a bolt water came through and hit me in the face.

Yep. Check out my build thread linked below; my truck has never been in my garage.

(Garage is filled with classic Pontiacs!).

Re: Anyone else workin out of a driveway?

I grew up working on a gravel and dirt lot, only protection was a willow tree we also used for engine pulling. Many hours in the western Oregon rain laying in water as a teen. Then graduated to military hobby shop and concrete patio. When I did my first conversion on my 59 in 85 it was done is a dirt floor Model A garage. When we moved the first thing I did, knowing the plans we had for remodeling the house and wanting a good shop, was to build by current garage shop and concrete drive way. I wish I would have plumbed for a restroom and fought my wife harder on the tree that kept it from being 8' longer. You can see pics in the background of my build photos. Trade off was the sunroom/garden area I built my wife for her hobbies!

Re: Anyone else workin out of a driveway?

makes me feel better now i know I'm not alone lol.. i want have my driveway continued beside my house so i can at least work in backyard but i just don't have extra cash for it, maybe when tax time comes around.. Doesn't help that my next door neighbor is a retired engineer with a big shop building . His has a 32 Ford coupe and some 50s car I've never seen before a henry something. It does help having a car guy as a neighbor so i don't get complaints.

Re: Anyone else workin out of a driveway?

everything I have done to the 64 has been done in the driveway! rewiring, installiing motor and trans-shifter,brakes,you name it. I am cleaning out the garage so I can get it inside this winter. I have to weld some patch panels in floor hard to do outside.

Re: Anyone else workin out of a driveway?

I'm still working on my shop so often I'll find myself working outside.
Sometimes because my shop is full, sometimes because the rig wont move.
Nice to be outdoors!

Re: Anyone else workin out of a driveway?

I did pretty much a complete build on a 67 Camaro while living in a trailer park, gravel roads and driveway. Engine ,trans, body and paint, had to bring everything in every night and then drag it all back out the next day.....

Re: Anyone else workin out of a driveway?

Hi, first time posting
I am new to this forum. I just started on my 55 Chevy second series big cab. I was going to ask the same question about space as well...until I ran across this post. I have a rental in town. I live in Oregon the weather is wet at least in the winter so I cant work outside much at least the biggest part of the time. I need all the space I can ,I also do woodworking so half the garage is a pickup body shop and the other half is a wood shop and my wife needs her space so it gets tight. I seem to move things around a lot, in and out of the garage that sort of thing. It sucks to have little room but at least its dry.

Re: Anyone else workin out of a driveway?

sometimes I wonder whether not having and then getting is better than having and loosing! I built my first truck in my dad's stocked shop, helped with several in my uncles even more stocked shop, bought a house and built a nice big garage/shop and then promptly moved. Now I'm stuck in half of a very under stocked two car garage in a condo complex! (Other half is storage) I'm about to loose that spot as winter is about here and I can't let my wife park in the snow with a one year old. The panel will be going into cold storage for the winter... again.

Re: Anyone else workin out of a driveway?

I here you there; I was out at my mother in laws for Seven months my truck was in storage out in the weather. I was a contractor local, had a house with a big garage plenty of room Lost all of that, so back to renting. Finally got on my feet It was a struggle to get what I have now, Had plans for a big workshop but life happens. maybe some other time before I retire, I may have opportunity again. So I know how that can be.

Re: Anyone else workin out of a driveway?

Every place I've rented for the last 25 years has had a rule against working on your own cars. For the first 2 years I still had my mom's house to do work at, after I got back from the Army I had a friend who's driveway I could work in on weekends only for about 15 years. Since we each moved, my friend's best suggestion has been to do whatever I have to in a WalMart parking lot, unless I can find someone near me with a driveway to lend...I'm still hoping to find someplace before I have to swap an engine, tranny, etc.
