OT ... Why sticking your fingers near moving fan belts is a bad idea ( graphic )

And I am a "professional" mechanic. It took about 2/3 of the tip off when it ran through the pulley. Luckily the doc did a good job sewing it back on and shoving the nail back where it used to be. Be careful around running fan belts !

You'd think it would hurt. It did for a few minutes after it happened but once the initial shock wore off it hasnt hurt since. I think the nerve endings got severred . Lucky me

This is a good post. It's good to remind people how important safety is when working with any type of machine. Espescially when you have pictures to back it up. As bad as it hurts when something like that happens, it's good to remind others that it can and will happen when you least expect it.

At least it was the middle finger LOL... I once had a Lincoln Cont. rip an earring out of my ear. We super glued it back together. I ended up taking both earrings out. The new guy at the shop puked from all of the blood. Didnt hurt though.

Shooting the Rod???

Looks to me like you might of shot the
rod at the fan, and it took a bite at you...
Glad they were able to save the torn off
tip....
We can only do so much as far as taken
Safety measures, but once in a while we will have accidents...
Take Care

Oh I just remembered a real bad one, A guy I know had his cuda jacked up,trying to get the tranny out, his forearm was vertical to the tranny, when the jack slipped, it drove his wrist to his elbow, and he had to drive him self to the hospital, he lived on a farm and no one was around, every time I jack up anything I think of that ugly scene, and I always us jack stands, It only takes one mistake. Every time I see some one trying to take a short cut and just us the jack, I tell them the story, do I sound like I'm preaching, ( USE YOUR JACK STANDS)

Stop flipping us off!
Jk

Thanks for this post, it is very easy to get cocky around machinery, and accidents DO happen.

thanks

I remember back in high school doing some body work for a buddy who wrecked his S-10. There was a rattle somewhere when the engine was running and we were looking for it. Imagine my surprise when the alternator fan bit the tip of my finger.

And the garage door industry claims torsion springs are dangerous!!!! Ha. 4000lb of steel two feet of the floor without a jack stand is dangerous. Or a fan/pulley setup with a few hundred lb/ft of torque and no shroud...

Be Careful Guys!

Ouch

I would keep an eye on the color of it, if it starts getting dark have the Doc. leach it to restore fresh blood flow.

My daughter had her finger tip cut off on some louvered steel laundry doors (playing around and fell with her finger in it) and they didnt leach it and it eventually fell off; not good. Hope it heals well.

Maybe we can start a saftey thread?

A friend of mine did the same thing on the 69' I bought from him while we were working on it. The difference is that he ran two fingers through the altenator pulley, and had to get surgeory to fix it all. It was pretty bad.... Keep your hands away from running belts!

Yep, that looks like it might have hurt a bit. Prolly gave ya quite a jump.
I know I gave my mom quite a startle when dad and I came running into the house, me losing a lot of blood. No fan schroud because we just put my car back together, got the motor started for the first time and I was cleaning up all the fluids that were squirting all over. Well, that spinning fan is hard to see and it sucked my hand right on in. Just a few short of thirty stitches in my fingers and I was on my way. I still have nightmares of that sound.

hydraulic shear. It pulled my arm inn up to the
elbow, but lucky for me the V-belt was loose.

Hope it heals fast...

Looks like u got lucky. It happened to me and it broke my thumb. Nothing like messing up your summer with a cast on your hand and arm.
