Spark Plugs

Bought a set of Autolite 85 plugs today . Gap was way off . Some had no gap at all . I've always checked new plugs , but never seen this before . The new plugs are usually close to .035 , which is where they should be . This is with the O.E. points and condenser . Just wondering .

Re: Spark Plugs

Last year, I also bought a set of autolites for my truck. Three of eight had the gap totally closed. I took them back to NAPA and they opened up another box of eight and there were two or three of those completely closed. Great quality control by Autolite. Wonder if there factory has a machine problem of some sort?

Re: Spark Plugs

Look where they're being made now, (printed on the box) which explains a lot. In some instances, they could have been dropped as well. I've been using them in my Ford for years. Another "sign of the times"

Re: Spark Plugs

Now that I think about it, I also had a couple of Autolites with closed gaps when I did a tune up a month or so ago.

Re: Spark Plugs

NGK makes 100 percent of AC Delco plugs, I watched em being made at their West Va. plant. AC hasnt built a part of any kind for 5 years, they are strictly a reboxer. I rep for all mfrs. who sell a plug into the NAPA system. I deal with alot of guys who dont believe this, but its the truth.

Re: Spark Plugs

When I first bought my 70, it had some strange plugs in it .When I went to get the right ones, I took one of the old ones with me. The young counter guys had no idea what they were. Finaly one old geezer looked at them and told me that they were airplane plugs. He then dug out an old book and showed me. It was a wonder they didn't burn a hole in the pistons.
