Dumb question, but need answer..

I thought I knew Dosen't the oil pan take a gasket? I went in and got a few different gaskets today, as my son Justin has been helping me change out leaky gaskets since getting my truck back. The guy at the parts store, whom is usually really on the ball and knowlegable, seemed confused at this request and by the time I left I was half wondering if I had dreamed that I even had something called an oil pan on my truck. I dont know where the confusion was, mabey it was just miscommunication. He kept asking me if it was the rear or the front one? Then that it didnt need a gasket at all. I know its been along time since Ive done all this stuff on my truck, but geeze...

thanks yall
junk

Re: Dumb question, but need answer..

some use RTV sealer and some use cork gaskets like you are thinking. Front is timing cover seal and rear is rear main seal.

If it were me I would spend the extra money and get a one piece pan gasket from fel-pro .

I like the one piece gaskets as well. I will assume that the R&R will require you to unbolt the motor mounts, and raise the engine a good bit, and then oil pan should come out. Make sure that everything is clean and dry before going back together.
