Can anyone tell me if this is original?

I recently purchased a 1970 C/20 for parts or who knows. Mathew and I were looking at it today, and he noticed something I've never noticed on one of these before. There is a strap that goes under the engine crossmember on the RH side to secure the engine in case the motor mount breaks. Is this factory? I've never seen one and have no idea. I looked at the LH side, and it doesn't have it. But we all know the RH mount is always the first to go. Everything on the engine looks to be close to original and it is a 350 if that matters.

Re: Can anyone tell me if this is original?

Not factory, but dealer. There was a problem in 69/70 with motor mounts breaking and pinning the metal throttle rod in the WOT position and causing wrecks, to counter this problem the Dealers were instructed to install these kits that included two sets of straps to prevent the engine lifting and pinning the throttle. They then moved to the cable type in 71 to prevent any further issues. These stop lifts are pretty common but often get trashed as the years pass or some may not have ever went in for the up grade from the dealer.

Re: Can anyone tell me if this is original?

It was a massive recall & was the largest recall in history till lately with Toyota. Something like 7 million vehicles were involved. I had one do it on me one time when I was road testing a customers car. He complained that something was wrong. I went around a corner & put my foot in it. You could feel the whole engine rear up & jambed the throttle wide open. I imediatly shut off the ign. & it fell back down. Often it pulled the vacuum hose out of the power brake unit but didn't that time. After that pactically all engine mounts had a safety bracket built in.

Re: Can anyone tell me if this is original?

the problem with that strap is it's installed on the wrong side// passenger side mount breaks engine just sits there, driver side mount and torque from the engine lifts it up causing the problem with the throttle linkage

Re: Can anyone tell me if this is original?

I doubt all these style engine mounts had a safety buckle in them within the last 15yrs, because when I was 16, I broke more RH motor mounts than I can remember. This was in a 70 Longhorn with the hardest running cobbled together 350 I had ever seen.

My 68 C20 with 327 had them on both sides when I bought it last year. They've been removed when I put the 5.3 in.

Re: Can anyone tell me if this is original?

My 68 impala I drove back in high school had the stop lift straps on it. Being young I didn't think anything of them. Was leaving school one day and decided to do a brake stand. Damn if the car didn't keep going after I let off. Wound up installing new prothane engine mounts the next day.

Re: Can anyone tell me if this is original?

I have a set of NOS lift stop cable on hand. I've never seen a picture of them installed though. I'll have to dig mine out. I believe there is supposed to be one for each side of the engine.

Re: Can anyone tell me if this is original?

I have broken enough LH mounts, but never a RH. Maybe it's because I didn't do any burnouts in reverse?

Same here, I ended up running a chain from the frame to the head on my 68 to keep it from moving but I didnt have the throttle stick on me thank God.

Re: Can anyone tell me if this is original?

Thats crazy. Why didn't GM redesign the motor mount and install that instead of a bandaid? Where they trying to save a buck on labor?

If you have ORIGINAL type mounts you should replace them. Most replacement mounts made since the 70s are the "interlocking" type and can't completely separate even if the rubber-to-metal bond fails.

Re: Can anyone tell me if this is original?

This is a very interesting post. Back in '69 my parents bought a Caprice with the 390hp/427 (rare car-527 built compared to 22xx 427/SS cars). At some point I remember them getting cables installed just like this for a recall bulletin on the motor mounts.

I just always figured it was a BB issue only for that particular model of car but guess not.

Re: Can anyone tell me if this is original?

I know this is an old thread but I have the original notice related to this recall on my 1969 CST and I thought some would be interested in seeing it.

My grandfather bought the truck new and i still have a lot of the original paperwork with my grandfather's notes on them. Most are related to servicing the truck but some, like the back of this envelope are related to the running of the farm/ranch.

Re: Can anyone tell me if this is original?

My 68 camaro had them , and the left is the one thats needed , right side would serve no purpose , although I believe my camaro [1st car bought factory stock 327] had them on both sides . I believe they were dealer installed , took mine off a broke drivers mount immediately . I remember mine were raw cable , no insulation
